Question about scope block taps

Post by JamesW »

Does this look like a Shiloh factory scope block tap? If so, what is it for? Looks like the forward scope taps are next to the rear sight. I'm hoping to attach a picture. Thanks, Jim

JamesW,

Tapping at an oddball angle, say 45 degrees or so, doesn't match any scope blocks I've ever seen. I'm pretty sure those aren't done at Shiloh.

I was kind of thinking that whoever was trying to mount for a right handed shooter like the Garand M1C. Thanks for the reply

Is the barrel an odd length! Muzzle to end of breech?

Does Shiloh put their witness marks on top of the receiver?

Looks sort of like one may have adapted that rifle for the scope mounts for the 340 savage or other semi side mount.

Most likely a Weaver tipoff scope mount.

I'm guessing the barrel has been set back and those scope block holes were top dead center at one time. I think the lettering and dove tail was cut for barrel sights after the set back. Usually barrel witness index marks are on the side right at the stock line or under the the forearm on the bottom. The length is almost certain of set back in my opinion.

I have a Shiloh 1863 military musket that also has a round barrel. The witness marks are on top of the barrel. I don't see any indication of a previous dovetail cut for the barrel sight.

I was thinking that those scope block screws were for the front block on a 34 inch barrel and if so the dove tail could have been removed in the set back.

There is another set of screws right next to the barrel sight

So much for my theory! I've never seen that configuration of scope block mount before. Interesting!

I have seen the Redfield International and similar receiver sights mounted on extended bases so that the action does not have to be tapped.
