Re: 63 sharps carbine wood restore
the stock is 'sticky' but strong... what would you use to clean the wood?
I want to use xxxx wool and a soft touch to clean not scrub off the 130 years...alcohol? paint thinner is too strong.
tks...Ken

Re: 63 sharps carbine wood restore
I'd try some aerosol class cleaner , let it dry then mix some water base wood dye into Tru-oil to match the varnish color of the original wood. A little deal I discovered with the water base wood dye is to desolve it in alcohol then add it to the Tru-oil in a little mixing container for a color match. It will penetrate well and you can thin or add color to it until it matches. Nice job and good for you getting her back in original looking order !

I was going to pad it with shellac, but I like the stain idea better....I'll try it.
It has some old grease or varnish on it and i want to remove that. then I'll stain it.

I meant try the glass cleaner to clean the original finish. It has alcohol already in it along with fast drying cleaners and it pretty mild but cleans well.
Be sure to try the stain on a separate piece of the patch wood first before applying it to the repair.

thanks medland, I put some stain on it now, and I'm letting it dry. I've ordered some Tru Oil and will mix the colors with alcohol then add to that and pad it to blend it in.
Having fun! Ken

I really enjoy watching your progress with the pictures. Always something new to be learned on any project no matter how often repeated, if your curious. You will discover your own nuance of what works best for you by actually doing it yourself.

Looking pretty good to me! The trick is to not over due it as well as that will also stand out. A gun this old is going to have developed some character and time and use has been part of it's story.

you bet medland.
the most important rule about restoration is.
WHEN YOU THINK YOU SHOULD DO MORE...
LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE!!!
and I intend to do that...
