as a final word on this project.
the stock was covered with grease, dirt etc. so I cleaned it with alcohol. NOW If any of you have tried to buy alcohol, forget it.
At CVS, the only thing they had was 75% alcohol hand sanitizer in a spray bottle.
used it to clean the stock.....worked wonderfully...
thy guy said there was no cartouches on it... look what I found when I cleaned it up. And you can see the final on the
wood forearm restore too..
done and done. Ken

Re: 63 sharps carbine wood restore
good questions. the bore is 98%......all sharp and deep, some very minor pitting. full of grease and crud but turpentine cleaned it out.
I was surprised about how sharp it was.
the crown is a little rough.
I have a crowning tool, and have re cut the crown on all my guns. 40 50 and 58, but this one I do not intend to fire so I'll leave it with the honest wear and history intact.
I was re re re re reading an old issue of the Sharps Collector Mag. (come on, we ALL save them and read them over and over)
and it had a refresher on how to load Sharps 54 paper cartridges. Thinking I'll fire it once or twice....the article said many of the
original Percussion Sharps had for end damage because of pressure leak.
the gun has a VERY tight action, and perfect gas seal.....
HOWEVER..
ALL I CAN THINK OF IS HAVING THE FOR END REPAIR BLOWING OUT...
@#$%^& Nope...Safe queen for sure...
HA....I get smarter as I get older. just fatter and balder....Ken

Re: 63 sharps carbine wood restore
I did notice the saddle ring has been squished....it has a definite chisel mark in the center to push it tighter and not allow the ring to bang around.
an easy fix, but some soldier got tired of listening to the Rebs yell WHAT THE HECK IS THAT! so I'll leave it be...
ok that''s my story....Ha Did I mention I think it's Custer's gun??? I'm on a roll....Ken

My great, great, great grandfather lost an arm in the civil war as a Calvary officer from Michigan. One of the relatives still has his carbine which is identical to the one you're restoring. I looked it over many years ago as a kid but didn't have any interest in it then.

I've owned two over the years. Both shot the original style "ring-tail" better than I can hold. I held a sheet of paper above and below to check for gas escape, and both sealed completely. If you think the seal is good give it a go. They are fun and should be shot.
