Quigley 2021

I am seriously considering coming out to the Quigley with my friend in 2021. I Would like to know what would be a good caliber rifle to bring currently have a 4570 with a 23 inch scope or a 4590 with irons and a 45 100 Shiloh also with irons. Would the 4570 be able to reach that far with the 23 inch scope.

I’ve shot two scoped Shiloh .45-2.1s at the Quigley, using 80 gr powder and 525-548 gr patched bullets. The standard mount on my 23” MVA scope, with standard barrel blocks, allows the load to reach the 805-yd Buffalo, but it’s almost out of elevation by then. A 550 gr grease-groove bullet with 63-70 gr powder loading might not elevate that far, but heavier powder charges in the .45-90 and -100 should reach the Buffalo easily with the standard mount and blocks.

I wound up putting risers under the rear blocks to bring the zero elevation setting to the 200M Chicken line, and now I’m well short of being out of elevation at 1000 yd. This setup gives plenty of adjustment between the 350-yd Buckets and the Buffalo.

The Buffalo is the farthest target at just over 800yds.
Your biggest challenge will be reading the wind.
The wind blows one direction the morning and then the other direction in the afternoon.

My 40-65 with 420-430gr bullets can easily reach all the Q targets. There are folks using even smaller (not lesser) calibers. As mentioned, it’s not the distance, it’s the wind.

What kind of cart is best

I use a Rugged Gear cart. Holds an astonishing load of stuff but still easy to push around (unless it’s muddy). If you have an unused Speed Stroller because the kids have grown up, it could be adapted to a gun cart as well.

Unless your iron sight staffs are the Scheutzen versions, they ought to have plenty of elevation adjustment, even for .45-70 loads.

I haven’t noticed any regularity in the wind, except that they turn it off when they blow the horn to go paint targets, and back on again when the horn blows to resume shooting.

There aren't many options for carts to purchase these days. My vote would be for the Rugged Gear cart. Like so many things in this sport, cry once and spend the money up front or spend lots more trying to make lesser options work. The Rugged Gear works great, stowes for transport easily and will hold everything you might possibly need. If you have a shooting partner get one of the collapsing canvas wagons to hold the overflow, lawn chairs, coolers etc. If something happens someday and you no longer need the cart it can easily be sold.
As Dave alluded, when the Quigley turns to mud, nothing works well. I can see why sod huts and Adobe were used for dwellings, when that Montana mud mixes with a little grass it turns into a sticky mass that once dried is like concrete!

I use a Schwinn jogging stroller with Kolpin Rhino Atv Mounts, hauls around a lot of gear.

And I would recommend each shooter have his own cart. IMO.

Chris I wore one cart out that was the 2 gun cart where the rifles laid back on about a 45 degree angle and it was a fine cart but at times with the heavy long sharps barrels and a empty cartridge box in the front the cart would fall backwards. If mine ever needs to be replaced I will go with one of these rugged gear gun mount mounted on the wagon rails.

Also while you go to the Q take in the BigHill shoot at Baker Mt. a week before the Q and a week after the Q. Great shoot and a very chasing and beautiful range and the match is run very well and relaxed.
