Deciding 45-70 vs 45-110

Watching the results at Byers, Colorado, this weekend, looks like in the 1,000 yard event the 45-70 is in the chase for first place.

CORRECTION Aviator won the 1,000 yard aggregate at Byers this afternoon with a Shiloh Sharps in 45-70 with BACO Money Bullet & BACO Bore Wipes. Just 18 months after starting his black powder target career.

You fellas would probably have a coronary if you knew the percentage of Shilohs that never get fired. I know of several that were bought new back in the 90's and their owners have never fired them. Then when you add all of them out there that have only been fired a few times, it is really amazing. Damn shame really. To each their own, but I say get out there and shoot them!

I had an acquaintance who ordered a Quigley model in .45 2-7/8 in about 1993. I think it took him about three more years before it was ready. He bought some loaded ammo someplace and fired a few rounds, decided that it wasn't accurate and put it in the safe. It pains me to think about it...

He wasn't really familiar with handloading, let alone loading black powder cartridges and I think that he was stumped. It's something to think about when choosing caliber, especially if you're new to handloading.

Congratulations! That place can be quite tricky! Robert sure puts on a good match though, and the pits there couldn't get better unless they put in a restaurant

Thanks. That's very similar to my load with the same bullet. I only shot that one to 800m but it seemed to work pretty well.

This was Aviator's first trip to Byers and the veterans of Byers probably neglected to advise him how difficult Mariah could be so I suspect he just ignored her, not knowing any better.

QDU is one of my top 3 favorite movies, I watch it on average 15 times each year. It's been about 2 months since my last viewing so it's time again.

When we were back home in MT last July,I ordered my Quigley, per the movie specs, with a 15 month wait for production to begin, so my excitement is really starting to build. Yes, I opted for 45-110 and am getting components together. So far about 250 45-110 cases and 100 45-12 Norma cases. I will be learning PP rolling and loading. Will likely change my 40-65 C. Sharps to PP also. Now I need to keep searching for more cases and find the 530gr PP bullets.

I weighed all the pros and cons of 45-70 vs 45-110 and just decided I wanted the thrill of 45-110. Sure, it will pack more recoil, cost more to reload. But as potentially the only Shiloh Sharps I will ever own, what the heck.
