Re: I need assistance on which barrel and twist rate to use
Actually I've found a good many falling blocks of various makes not square to the bore/action threads, either but rollers are the worst offender which is not good for case head square. I have heard/read that some even have to index cases to get them chambered which is not particularly conducive to safety or accuracy. The head of the case in a loaded round gets bent out of coaxis with the chamber and won't seat. The blame is usually a dirty throat or misaligned bullet seat in the case neck.

Well I just ordered a Douglas barrel 30 inches long ,1-18 twist, breech will be 1.2 inches and the muzzle will be .9 with a straight taper, bore dimensions will be .457. This fit my budget and probably will shoot better than I can, and should handle a bit better than my Sharps with a 34 inch barrel.

Fiatmom,
That will work well if installed well. You should be good to go.

Yeah, what Brent said! My two Martini cadet match rifles both have Douglas barrels in .35 cal, one 14 and the other 10 pitch. They both are capable of better accuracy than I can hold for in our offhand matches.
Douglas is pretty much all I use for center fire rifles having given up on Shilen after a couple of them that walked when heated up.

Douglas barrels are good, now the trick will be for the barrel fitted to the action and the chamber cut straight.

yes get the douglas.
they are good, and at one time were used on br rifles in oz almost exclusively.
left in round profile leaves less opportunity to reduce accuracy potential.
and as don says, avoid gun plumbers.

say I was looking to re-barrel a rifle, where would one look for a octagon barrel?? I dont really care about the price or lead times, I want the best.

Green Mountain and BRC have octagon barrels. McGowen will do an octagon on one of their barrels. Douglas you'll have to have someone make the blank octagon for you.

Other than the aforementioned Green Mountain (a fine barrel), you could do a whole lot worse than your local WI barrel makers. Bartlein in Jackson and Krieger in Richfield. Steve Durren in MI and CPA in PA will make a round barrel octagon for you and mount on your rifle. However, it will cost quite a bit more than starting off with an octagon Green Mountain.bpcr shooter wrote: ↑Tue Aug 18, 2020 1:55 pm say I was looking to re-barrel a rifle, where would one look for a octagon barrel?? GREAT, Fiatmom has settled his issue by choosing a Douglas CM 18 twist, what say we start a new thread?
What should the subject be??

zack,
there is a barrel maker in your neck of the woods called blake barrel.
he claims them to be top class.
not sure what calibres he does.

Re: I need assistance on which barrel and twist rate to use
I just looked up the difference in bullets weights between the target loads and high velocity stuff and found as I expected that the high velocity bullets are up to 25 percent lighter in some cases. Many of the low velocity target loads are 40 grains and many of the high speed bullets are in the 30-33 grain range which explains a lot of the difference in defection.
Another theory is that deflection is not caused by reduction of flight time as Sierra says but rather the percentage of velocity loss over the same distance. According to the article the low velocity stuff sheds it's speed at a lower rate than does the high velocity and this causes less deflection.
I don't think they have this nailed down yet across the board as there seems to be some different ideas about deflection cause with lead bullets.

Re: I need assistance on which barrel and twist rate to use
high velocity bullets are lighter and faster than heavier slower ones.
however, given similar nose shapes, the heavier bullet has a higher b.c.
higher b.c. = less velocity loss = less deflection.
