.45 LDPE wad diameters ...

Post by Etienne Brule »

I would like to know your experience.

I use to shoot 45-90 Sharps with Starline brass and money bullets.

I use to make my own LDPE wads with a Rifle Press Mounted Wad Punch : diameter 0.459 inch

https://www.buffaloarms.com/45-caliber- ... nch-45pmwp

While buying some other things on BA site, I noticed that they sell LDPE wads. diameter 0.463 inch

https://www.buffaloarms.com/45-caliber- ... 463060poly

I bought some of BA 0.463 wads just to compare.

Do you think that there will be a difference ...

Your thoughts ??

The 0.463 diameter wad will seal the case ID down into the case better than a 0.459 which could be a loose fit
when placed deeper into the case.

Keep on hav'n fun!

I am wondering if a 0.463 LDPE wad would let some "plastic fouling" in a 0.459 bore ??

Well, I will check that with a borescoope when I receive the BA wads.

Thanks

Ditto, and frequently I shoot dirty during the whole match. Meaning I've shot 55 to 60 rounds using only a blow tube for fouling control.

No leading, no plastic fouling, no loss of accuracy.

I have the same experience over 15 years with both .40 and .45. I shoot dirty, up to 80 rounds in a 60 animal match, and have never had plastic fouling.

What is the advantage of using poly wads instead of the vegetable wads?

It's actually pretty logicql to use .462 wads - otherwise the wad would be a bit loose in the case, and as part of its function is to prevent gas cutting...

The poly will obturate and seal the bore while protecting the base of the projectile from deformation by powder grains. The same diameter/thickness vegetable wad will not seal the bore nearly as well and even with a .060 in. wad, powder imprinting on the projectile base occurs. If you have visible gas cutting on the bullet, you will also have lead being deposited.

Accuracy in my experience is the same.

Kurt, with as many pictures of recovered projectiles you have, please post a couple. I've re-melted mine.

Sorry woody I don't do that anymore, just to much jib-jab resulted when I did it so last year about this time I turned a 5 gallon bucket full plus a 40# cat litter pail 1/3 full into bread loaves.
