Greetings all!
I am experimenting with loading paper patch bullets for the 45-110 in a 34" barrel Shiloh. I am wondering if the lube cookie can be too thick? I guess my concern is ringing the chamber because of the lube cookie.
I plan on starting with 95 grains of 1F Goex Express, BR2 primers in Norma cases with the lube cookie between a .015" overpowder wad and a .030" wad under the .441 cup based bullet, which is 530 grains, while varying the lube cookie thickness.
I shoot grease groove 45-70, 45-90, 50-70 and 50-90, but have never experimented with PP.
Any help is appreciated!

The short answer is no. You can't hurt anything, you may not help anything either, but it is safe. If you are just target shooting, you do not NEED a cookie however. It will take up some case space which is often nice for the 110, but it is not necessary or harmful.

You are okay, and experimenting is the surest way to learn.
Good luck!

Re: 45-110 Lube Cookie Thickness
I started a few years ago with the 45/70. At that time Kirk told me 3/16 grease wad for my hunting loads. I just started shooting the 45/110 PP a month ago and was told by 2 different guys 2 different thicknesses , The 500 gr load was 3/16 and the 565 gr load was 3/8.

There is no "correct" thickness for any particular bullet or rifle, just what you find works. But if you are going to shoot accurately, expect to wipe between shots. Lube cookies will only make a minimal difference in shooting with paper patches. It all depends on your goals.

Re: 45-110 Lube Cookie Thickness
The original Sharps loading instructions called for a 3/16" lube wad.use 105 grs Fg' seat a .026" card wad over the powder and do compression. insert the lube wad and put your .030" on top just snugged down you should have 1/8 -3/16" space to seat your bullet. You don't buy a 45-2 7/8" to load down to 45-90 loads.???? Bobw

Heck bob, I get 107 gr in my .45-100 as a minimum load (albeit w/o cookie). Seems like downloading the 110 is almost universal.

Re: 45-110 Lube Cookie Thickness
I have used lube cookies with 104 grs of FG Goex Express, 3/8 of an inch thick of black Magic Lube in my 45-110 with good results, 4 dead buffalo.
Accuracy was good for up to 16 consecutive shots, it’s no target load but is a great hunting load.
