Matt,

Make your own die.
I don't know if you have the reamer for that chamber or not. If you are having one ground have them make a second reamer for the sizing die and have them send you a .438 die blank with a .438 bore and find a lathe and make the sizing die. You most likely use it for a PP bullet so that is the only die you need.
Below are some examples of my reamer I had ground for a .44-75 Ballard and I mad my dies, I make most of my dies for my rifles chambers I have the reamers made for and they are all tight PP that will not except a GG bullet.
The two reamers are the .44-75 and the chamber cast second from the bottom is the chamber.

Matt if you follow through with your .44-70 I can loan you my reamer and you can short chamber the die blank to make your die.

Newlon Precision www.newlonprecision.com makes die blanks.I had Dave Higginbotham make me a 50-90 with a custom, no freebore chamber by Dave Manson. Dave cut me a sizing die based on a sizing reamer designed by Manson. It worked like a dream. I only used the die to initially size my Starline 50-90 brass. I only shoot paper patch and no longer have a need to size those cases. Basic point is that Newlon makes die blanks. Excellent sizing dies can be made from them.

TNX. for that Link Michael.
I been wanting to make some base swage dies but I wonder with the SST 416 he uses if it would take a Carbide reamer to cut those blanks. SST will burn up a reamer in a hurry.
The non-hardened 12L-14 Steel would work.

Kurt,

I dont have a reamer either, What we were thinking......the rifle is chambered in 45-100, orig a 45-70 with long freebore and its not needed anymore so to keep the rifle we wanted to re-barrel it. Was hoping Shiloh would do this for us. Gotta make some calls first obviously but, when I was looking for dies I came up empty handed. We both liked the 44-70 as we still have a lot of 45-70 brass laying around and it would be very easy to just run it into a die and have 44.
