Big 50 Rifle

Post by dcwilliams »

After years waiting My new 50-90 is home :).

Thanks to Orville for all of the questions he answered, and the chamber reamer, patch samples and cast bullets I used for my brooks mold. And thanks Stephen Borud for the resizing die!

Very nice rifle. Looks like you got some good advice on configuration and features. If you hunt you should like that low notch rear sight. I have the carbine length which was also found on some sporting rifles and like it I opened up the v notch a little. Congrats.

Did the rear sight come from Shiloh?

Sam,
That is the Lawrence sight. Shiloh puts it on by request.
I have that sight on my .44-77 Shiloh hunting rifle and by the way, where that slide is now it will just shoot over the back of a Buffalo at 800 yards with my rifle :)

Very nice rifle, congratulations,

Did you opt for the original twist or modern 1x22?

I went with the slower 1:36 twist, and a paper patch chamber using Orville's reamer. There are at least 3-4 guys here with this setup, so I felt like I could start off with some decent load information. I have already had an adjustable nose pour mould cast by brooks from a few rounds that Orville sent me some time back. It should be a pretty sweet shooter with a 475 gr paper patched bullet and 100 gr. of black powder.

Actually looks like a Hartford model to me (octagon barrel, Hartford collar, lawrence sight). The business rifle has a 28" round barrel. The All Business rifle is a business rifle spec'ed with a 30" round barrel usually put on a #2 Creedmoor silhouette rifle. It also features a 45-110 chamber cut with the Loomer original style tight chamber reamer, b&c. pack hardening, steel checkered butt, fireblued screws, it's purpose is all business near or far hence the name I gave it "All Business rifle" I ordered it back in 2010 in frt of a heavy / round barrel run and had it in 6 months. Among the many glorious features of the Shiloh with a 30" barrel is that the sight radius gives you the.01" sight movement equals 1 moa. Bobw
