Paper patch videos

Post by semtav »

The other thread got me to wondering, is there anyone on here capable of posting short videos of the different methods people use to patch their bullet?
Where we could just send you a short clip via text and you can post a link or a thread.

My method comes natural to me but I'm sure it would be the clumsiest thing the next person ever saw.

Would be nice to see the different ways people do it

The problem with sending videos via text or e-mails is the large size. You usually have to reduce them in resolution so much to send that the final product is almost unwatchable due to resulting small size and graininess.

I have a u-tube channel and more than happy to upload them and post links to it but they would probably have to be sent via jump drive in snail mail for best results.

My channel is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpKxAbwgHsk

Some buff hunt videos on there as well.

Brian, Carolyn stood behind me and took to with her little thumb talker and sent it to my E-mail and I put it on my Flicker. When you do that you don't have to mess reducing the image here to make it small enough to post it.

Over the years I have patched several different ways. Wet, Dry and twisted tails for my original cup based bullets I cast and swaged. The cup based bullets need the twisted tail to protect the fragile skirts and they work well when you get that right.
The wet patched bullets. I have found to many patches stuck through the target backer even at 200 yards I mostly shoot at and also I saw patches on recovered bullets shot through 8' plus deep snow when I do my testing. This cant be a good thing when it comes to shooting a match.

Here is my special Independence bullet. It would be a shame to make the art work run wet patching them :)

it does not hurt to be adept at both wet and dry patching.
the reason being that wet patched bullets, particularly if you apply a little stretch while rolling, will be thinner than dry ones rolled freehand.
you can achieve a very good fit to bore this way, depending on the size of the cast bullet.
for target shooting in a wiped bore, i look for a nice sliding fit as the bullet goes into the rifling.
seth cole 55w and 55y also offer a slight variation in patched diameter to get a good fit.
with these 2 choices you can fine tune fit and compare accuracy.
some question the hardness of the bullets i use (12 to 14 to 1) and their ability to bump up as well as 16 to 1 or softer, and i wonder if chasing this fit has led to me having no problems.
wet patching is easier for me on a board.
my board has a stop for the bullets nose, and a line for the front of the patch in order to have consistency and squareness.
i remember ricks video, and brents website has some good stuff on this.
kenny, rick, and brent are to blame for my interest and success in this quest.
should also mention kurt.

Same as you, Kurt, just the same. I use 9# pure cotton paper; lucky enuf to have bought reams of it while BACO was selling. I’ve been experimenting with 9# wood paper, and find the bullets (530 gr. money bullet, cast 16-1) hit in the same X-ring at 200. I cast them at .444, and swage down to .443 for a nice snug fit in throat of bbl. I’ve been setting paper’s edge right at the beginning of the bullets’ ogive, and find no lead when searching for it. All is well. Gun is a 16# Sporter with MVA long range buffalo sights. It’s a shooter.

Looking for my new heavy-antiqued 16# Shiloh Sporter #1 to be completed. Gonna fit it with the standard Lawrence ladder rear sight, and a copper penny blade front sight. It’ll be my meat gun.

Again, I really like using this stuff I bought at Best Buy. I was finding that I was wrapping paper best when my hands/fingers were sweaty, not what I wanted when my hands were clean and dry. I do such a better job of patching when I use this stuff.
To you that have small pupils, keep up the good shooting!

I dont have a facebook or youtube account, so maybe ill try to take a video of how i do it and email it to you. Sounds like Dean and i do it the same way.

Be interesting to see how many different ways there are to wrap a bullet.
