Re: Amoskeag Nov. 2020 auction
It looks like the prices are dropping for the collectables. We have a local annual collectors show here and I been noticing the prices have dropped, especially for the early Winchester and Henry rifles.

I would buy another Shiloh in a heartbeat if they made a replica of this

Easily the most desirable of all Sharps.

Lots of fine firearms in that auction. I've bought from Amoskeag and everything has been as good or better than their descriptions. They are easy to work with. Once my credit card got corrupted right before an auction and I called to tell them and that I would not have a new credit card until after the auction. Later that day a lady called to tell to go ahead and bid, that I was a repeat customer and that they would work with me. I thought that was good customer service.
Brent, you can get a '77 model much like that one except for the double extractors. All you need is the desire and the $$$.

No you cannot get anything like that. Not the stock, not the lock work, the block, etc. Fruend rifles were/are very special.

A Pox on Ray Newman for posting this link.
Actually my fault, I should never, ever have clicked on it. Talk about eye candy?

Amoskeag Auction Co is right up the road from me.
About ten minutes north.
They occupy quite a bit of space in one of the old textile mills along the Merrimack river in Manchester.
Manchester is in NH, one of those little states up north that everyone gets confused about east of the Mississippi.
Walking through their space is better than most firearms museums, certainly more entertaining than Springfield armory down in Ma.
The amount of "stuff" there is mind boggling.
The eye candy that's listed in their auctions is a fraction of what they have.
There's a rack of Cochran Turret rifles next to a rack of Porters.
There's a rack of Amoskeag contract 1861 Springfield rifles.
There's boxes and boxes of old reloading equipment and shooting accessories.
I remember Jason (the owner) walking into my shop.
I had a photo of my Sharps and Browning Creedmoor hanging on the wall behind my front counter.
He looked at it for a minute and asked me who owns the Browning and the Sharps.
I had him and Don auction some firearms for me a couple of years ago.
About 40 or so, mostly Mil-surps.
They sent a van to my other shop that was loaded with rugs and cases.
Everything was photographed, and detailed individually on paper.
Most all of it went for more than I could've sold it for myself on Gunbroker or Arms list and it was hassle free.
Amoskeag is a Pennacook indian word. It means "good fishing place".
Just a little NH history.

Re: Amoskeag Nov. 2020 auction
My dad found two Amoskeag contract muskets in a French scrap yard in the late 50's. He paid $1.00 each for them. He gave one to my brother and I to play with and kept one. We destroyed that one. My brother has the other one. Dad gave me a Smith carbine instead. How the two US rifled muskets ended up in France is your guess as well as mine.

Re: Amoskeag Nov. 2020 auction
Woody: from what I have read, France was still in a transition period going from muzzleloaders to the Chesspot bolt action rifle during the 1870-71 Franco-Prussian War. As a result, the French army was armed with a hodgepodge of new and obsolete French, Belgian, English and American rifles--muzzleloaders, breechloaders and repeaters using paper, rim fire, and centerfire cartridges.
Classic example: Springfield 1870 Navy rifle. Made under license from Remington at the Springfield Arsenal, Navy inspectors found problems with the rear sight placement which weakened the chamber, making the rifle unsafe. Sold off as surplus, then later bought up by the French.
Like Kurt, I was surprised at some of the prices. I think prices for “collectable” firearms might have peaked and are levelling off and in some cases a slight decrease.

Ray Newman, have to wonder if about the Franco Prussian Wars Woody had developed a strong interest in girls and that bit of arms history slipped past his consciousness.

45bpcr, like you, I live about 30 minutes south of Amoskeag and in addition to the best gun museum I’ve ever been too you forgot to mention that you can pick up, hold, fondle and on occasion accidentally drool on the sale items. Very interesting place.
Just another homesick Texan that shouldn’t have left in the first place!

You just need to clean the drool up quick and it's not usually a problem
