Re: Caliber
What advantage would it have over a 40-65?

My winchester
Case holds 50 gns of 1.5 swis.
Recoil on my rifle at 10# is about 75% of the 40-65.

Re: Caliber
I'm not being snarky, just curious. It's no big deal to load 50-55 grains of powder under a 300 grain bullet in a 40-65, so I was just wondering if the extra hassle of finding or making cases, finding dies, etc are really worth it. Thanks, Cody

Re: Caliber
If you're favorite caliber for the last 20 years has been a 45-70, probably not. A 40-65 or 38-55 would be best choice.jackrabbit wrote: ↑Mon Dec 21, 2020 12:19 pm I was just wondering if the extra hassle of finding or making cases, finding dies, etc are really worth it. Thanks, Cody
If you like something different in a smaller caliber, the possibilities are endless.

Re: Caliber
Knowing Chris F's physical condition, state of well being and his recoil tolerance a 38 special might be more in order

Re: Caliber
Not to be rude either, i rebarreled my 40-65 to 40-50 and it was the simplest ctg to make work
Other than my 2&7/8.
With three hundred gn bullets my 40-50 with a slow twist out shoots the 40-65. Thats just my gun,
I have shot over 180 rounds in a day with it and still cleaned it with 3-4 patches. Never could do that with the 40-65. It is in my opinion a very efficient ctg. And i have a sizing die , and only have used it to make cases. My brass fits my chamber and my bullets fit the brass so i only clean and reload. The bullets are a snug fit after cleaning.
Simple simple.
Am i reccommending it , only of you want one.
And there are lots of chambers for the round. Make sure to get the rifle before making the brass and buying the mould you want to use.

Chris F, before you rebarrel and get rid of the 70, have you considered loading it down and/or using lighter bullets? There is sure a lot of loading literature on the old .45-70.

Re: Caliber
I have personally seen Arnie's rifle and seen it shoot.....many times. It truly is a pooch in the recoil dept. If it ends up being too much you can load it down very easily. With a 325-350gr bullet that should be VERY light recoil in a 10-12lb rifle, even in a roller (boat paddle ) it should be fine. I would say Arnie weighs in at about........half of me , and it seems as though he has ZERO trouble shooting it all day.

Re: Caliber
just remember, the weight of the bullet has the greatest influence on recoil.get a lighter bullet with more driving bands and you will also reduce case capacity art

Re: Caliber
If were me would sell everything BP and concentrate on 22BPCR & other 22RF games. Ridgway starts their 22BPCR matches this spring and Atglen has all sorts of 22 silhouette matches, including a 200yd benchrest match. Get a new Hepburn from DZ Arms, Low Wall from C. Sharps or Stevens 44 1/2 from CPA with a #2 or #2.5 weight barrel that is 22-24" long and forget about these rifles with a recoil of any sort. Work within your boundaries.
