So I did a thing last Thursday.

Post by Kenny Wasserburger »

Made a quick trip to Big Timber to hang out and shoot in 50 mph gusts for the first Hateful 8 Shoot.

On Thursday I set down with Lucinda and ordered myself a 1877 in 45-100. 1-16 twist barrel Pack hardened Rigby flat. Like an original #1. Plain wood nothing fancy. Full heavy round 32 inch barrel no taper. Drilled tapped and blocks mounted. Mercury recoil reducer installed.

Plan on using it a lot...

I asked Kirk about that, just drill and tap like normal, gives you a bit more elevation is all. Which will work fine I use the 900 yard block on my other rifles, the 800 will go on this one and should be good to 1000 Yards. It will have no dovetails as it will never see irons. Least that’s my current plan.

Kenny,

I just wondering what scope, blocks and mounts you use for shooting to 1000 yards? I can make it with my '74 with a 30" barrel using a 17" 6X scope and DZ mounts at 7.2" spacing. I can not get there with my 34" rifles. I'm not really sure what I'd have to do to scope my 34" Hepburn for Creedmoor, but the day is coming when I'll have to do it.

Congratulations on the '77, it should be a great rifle!

Jim, I have shot to 1000 with DZ mounts and a 0.375" block on the rear and a 0.175" on the front. That's on a 10.34" spacing on my Borchardt. It's good for about 300 yards to 1150 or so.

My 34" barreled Sharps has an MVA 28" with standard MVA scope blocks and their Creedmoor mounts. It's good for 200 to 1000 with no block changes necessary.

Jim:
With my DZ Arms scope (7.2" spacing) on my Shiloh 1874, I can go from 100 yards to 1100 yards.
This with a 45-70, with a 540 grain Money bullet starting out about 1320 fps.
The rear block is .125 taller than the front block.
I have to use a 5/8 inch tall rear block, so that the end of the 32" long barrel doesn't infringe on the view at 1000 yards.

So from what I'm hearing in order to scope my 34" Hepburn I would have to go to a longer scope (28") and MVA Creedmoor mounts. Or cut the barrel off at 30", which is not an option.

The DZ mounts and whatever blocks I have on my 30" Sharps work well from 200 to 1000, though at 1000 I was looking through my front sight which was not a problem. With the same (pretty much) setup on my 34" Sharps I was looking through the front sight at 900 and the end of the barrel at 1000. At 1000 I had to hold on the number board and it was not good.

The odd thing is that with the 34" barrel it seems I can still see well with irons, but with the 30" I could not find the target. Now it was a rather dark day so there is that, but irons were not working at all. I switched to my scope and at least I could shoot even if rather poorly, but that was another problem altogether and not in anyway involving the sights.

Kenny,
Sorry to borrow your thread. If (when) I need more info I'll start a new one. Enjoy your '77 when you do get it.

Jim, you just need taller blocks for the 34 inch barrel, not a longer scope.
The angle of the scope will be the same no matter the length of barrel, for a given load and distance.
The line of sight just needs to be high enough to clear the end of the barrel.

Some folks prefer the micrometer style of the DZ Arms mounts, and some the MVA Creedmoor style.

The DZ Arms has .450 inch vertical travel, which is about 225 minutes at 7.2 spacing.

Jim,

I use a 23 MVA scope 10.3 spacing on my 34 inch LRE. Taller blocks are all that’s required.

My Creedmoor mount handles it fine, however with the Winchester mounts, a taller rear block is required. I use the 900 yard block for 8-9-1000. This new rifle with the Rigby flat will give me an extra ..050 of elevation, about 16 MOA with a 23 inch scope. In a 45-100 should be able to use the 800 yard block and cover all 3 yardages. The silhouette block covers midrange nicely.

I have an MVA 23" scope with the Silhouette mounts on 10.34" spacing, and can reach at least to 1100 yds. with Shilohs from 45-70 to 45-110 and 30" to 34" barrels. And a highwall in 45-90 with 33" barrel. U may have to remove the front sight to get a clear picture.

Jim,

With my DZ scope and mounts on my .45-90 and I use the .325 rear block and the .175 front block and that gets me past 1000 yards with 7.2" spacing.
But the 34" barrel I see a bunch of barrel shadow and looking through the front sight hood at 1000. with setup. But it works great from 200-1000.

Aviator, how in the world do you get a 540 grain bullet doing 1320 Fps out of a 2.1 case? Duplex?
Yeah, those 77;s are the best looking Sharps ever made in my opinion , what will it weigh?

74 grains of Swiss 2F, and a bullet with reduced bands.
