Nice cartridge for bad shoulder?

Post by johnl »

Gents

I did a number on my right shoulder, torn the rotator cuff. What caliber is the softest shooting? 38-55 maybe? Thinking of either rebarrelling a #1 Sporter half oct 26” standard or just sell it and get one a new one? Use will be a 200 yard hole puncher shot off a bench. Suggestions, thanks.

The .38-50 would be an excellent choice.

I'd choose the 38-55 because the brass and dies are a lot easier to come by. But another thought might be the 32-40. That would be even less recoil. Don't know if Shiloh makes their rifles in that caliber though. With a standard weight barrel it would probably be about 9 pounds or so.

Give that shoulder time to heal and you will be able to handle any of the black powder shells again.
I went through this twenty years ago that put a 6" scar on my right shoulder where they had to take a chunk off the collar bone and pull the tendon back up drilled a hole through and sewed it back together and by the end of the year I shot the .45-120 again as well as the 50 when the 120 broke.
All will be well in a couple months.

At 200 yards the .38-55 will be good if you want a Shiloh. For a .32-40 you'd be looking at something other than a Shiloh but it'll be very gentle on your shoulder. They tend to be more sensitive to fouling than the .38-55 when shooting black powder, and mould selection is a little more limited.

To make the .38-55 even softer shooting, look at IMR-4227 instead of black powder if you aren't bothered by the newfangled technology :-).

Give it some time. My shooting shoulder has had a broken clavicle, about 8 years ago suffered a separation, 4 years ago tore my rotater cuff. Thought I'd have to downsize myself. After a several months of healing was able to shoot the 45-90 again. Also started using one of these, makes all the difference. I have several recoil pads, thi one is the best by far.

As an Anesthesiologist who has seen a lot of arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs, if you have a complete tear, you need to get it repaired surgically so you can lead a normal life. Otherwise it will affect way more than just your shooting. If you have a partial repair, you can rehab it with physical therapy. Bottom line this is just a temporary inconvenience. Don't let it get the best of you. Best wishes for recovery!

Yes do the physical therapy. I had a morpheme pump for pain and slept sitting up for a couple nights.
Going for therapy putting golf T's in the pegboard I could not lift my arm much above by belt line. I had a good Doctor and I have no pains yet.

I have been having a ball with three cadets chambered in .357 Max, .357 Mag and a 310 cadet wildcat. The Max has case volume enough to use black powder in as well as smokeless, it is easy on powder, lead and your shoulder. Cases are still available as well from Remington and perhaps Hornady.

I had three small tears in my shooting rotator several years ago. Physical therapy via the VA and I am able to shoot anything I want. I didn't miss a match during the rehab. Just careful lifting and holding for offhand. Now I don't even know I had an issue.

I had problems with my left shoulder for years. My brothers had played college football and later they had shoulder problems and repairs..multiple repairs, so I opted to rehab each time. Rehab worked and I could still do jujitsu with the younger guys until I was in my 50's..then I had to walk away from that. I still lifted and hit the gym everyday until at 62 I saw a young guy running carrying the heavy kettle balls around the track...so naturally I had to do that. I felt a pain in my shoulder and it got so bad I could not lift my arm over my head.
Two years of rehab and I have very little pain and enjoy plenty of movement, but shooting a heavy draw re curve or longbow is something I had to walk away from...so I bought a compound bow.
My left hook isn't what it use to be on the heavy bag, I can't run very far because of a bad knee ..etc, etc.. But I still lift everyday, walk several miles with Jeanne hit the bag and shoot.

The trick I have learned from the older than me guys is " Keep moving' . I have had to walk away or modify my involvement in certain areas of my life because of age and injury..but I'm still enjoying life.
Keep shooting as long as you can. One of my old 64 year old former partners always has a 30 something year old beauty on his arm and when we were comparing lifestyles he told me " Shoot those old guns, you'll live longer than I will and they cost a hell of a lot less than women"
