brass question

Post by bpcr shooter »

If you could choose one or the other, would you use Starline or Jamison? I have thousands of starline in just about everything I shoot, and do like it, but as of now the brass I want is out of stock and its been that way for a while and came across some from Jamison.

Any thoughts good or bad??

I like the Jamison, and better yet, my rifles really like it.

A little thinner, and not as brittle as starline, the inside of the case is a bit different ahead of the flash hole, it's tapered, so some decappers won't work.
It also holds just a bit less powder than the Starline.

The only Jamison brass I have used is in my .44-77 and it is excellent brass. I mostly shoot Starline and have never had a problem with it in the several calibers I've used it in. The only other brass I currently use, though it is very old now, is R-P in my .40-65. That brass fits that chamber perfectly and it is my most accurate BPCR at 220 yards hands down.

I don't believe you can go wrong with Jamison from all I've seen and read.

I recently purchased Jamison 45-90 cases. I weighed a few to check for weight consistency, they averaged 244 grains. The starline 45-90 cases averaged 204 grains. I'm unsure of the brass to powder conversion rate, but I'm sure the Jamison brass will have less capacity. Tim.

brittle is in part due to how you anneal the necks.
some experimenting here can pay dividends.

40gr seems like a lot, I wouldn't have expected that much difference. I would be interested as how that translates to charge difference between the 2.

About 3-4 grains of 1 1/2 f but the velocity remains pretty close.
Accuracy in my rifles is better with the Jamison.
But ymmv.

I full length resized one case each of starline and Jamison 45-90 brass. I trickled swiss 1.5 thru a 24" drop tube and carded off the top of the case. The Starline case held 94.5 grains. The Jamison held 90 grains. Tim

I bought a bunch of Starline brass for my .45-90 a few years ago through T.O.T.W. I deburred the primer flash holes, trimmed to length and after 250 cases got less brass shavings than would cover the head of a match. Upon weighing the cases, I found them to be within 4 grains of each other, I gave up weighing before I got to 200 of them. I'm not quite as fussy with brass as some folks but found the consistency of the Starline to be as good as any Lapua brass I've used for my high-power silhouette guns. :D

I cut a jamison case in half because i was having troubles with my deprimer knocking the primer all the way out and it getting stuck in a fouled case.
The head is considerable thicker and there is a pretty good funnel to the primer on the inside.
I thinned down my decapper considerable to get it to work correctly. If you have a long pin it should not be a problem.
