Wood stock losing its luster

Post by ERPinMT »

The stock on my Shiloh Roughrider in 45-70 has been slowly drying out over the past couple years, probably due to our low-humidity environment here in MT. Some of our wood furniture kinda shows that too over time. We run a wood stove a lot in the winters.

I'd like to spruce things up for looks certainly, but more importantly to preserve and protect. I store it loose, not cased. What can you guys recommend to try for restoring its luster?

Before you do anything to that wood , Call Kirk and ask what finish
they put on. Then follow his suggestions to restore the finish.

ERP

Not sure what Kirk will say, but it will probably be " Gun Glow" . Shiloh sells it, and I have used it on all my rifles with great success.
It is good for Wood, Leather, and Metal. Check the Shiloh site.

Probably wise to see what Kirk suggests. I'll do that first.

Some of my other rifles' wood finish have dulled over the years too, so yeah maybe this Gun Glow is the ticket for them.
Thanks for comments guys.

X2 on talking to Kirk or Lucinda.
FWIW, I lived in the Mojave Desert for 28+ yrs and never had any issue with the finish on mine.

Years back I had the same question wishing to add just a little more depth to the finish. Answer in an e-mail response was tung oil.

Try Renaissance wax, museum grade , it is expensive but is used to preserver priceless antiques/artifacts wood, leather or metal.

I have been reading about this restorative: RENAISSANCE MICRO-CRYSTALLINE WAX/POLISH
https://restorationproduct.com/shop/renaissance-wax/

Does anyone use this? Is this the Renaissance wax mentioned above?
Evidently it's used at the NRA museum and a lot of others.

I have used Old West Snake Oil and it seems to do ok for the stock. http://oldwestsnakeoil.com/

Yes, that is the same. I've been using it on all my guns. It works well for under barrel protection sealing both the stock and barrel. It even works really well on my muzzle loaders! It was $25.00 bucks for a little 4-6 ounce can but I'm finding it's well worth the price!
I've also been using it on the bow builds.

Always enjoy hearing all that collective experience.

Guidance from Shiloh :

The finish applied to the semi-fancy wood when I ordered it was just the standard finish, so that could explain the "dull" appearance that's come with time/handling. (Wish I had that to do over again!)

They indeed recommended to apply "Gun Glow" to help protect & preserve it, as some of you had also suggested.
So I do plan to start there at least on this rifle.

Thanks for all the good ideas. They'll come handy on some shotguns I've abused.

Harlan's Gun Glow hard to beat. I've used it for several years to wipe down all my rifles.
