16 or 20 to one
I notice that the latest BP Ctg. magazine (yeah, we all get it) lists 20 to one by the long range winners as their go to mix.
I've been shooting 16 to 1 in my 40 70 SS Shiloh 74 , and I have some 20 to 1 too. Thinking about going to 20 to 1 again.
bullet is the BA 408 300M5, seems to like to be loaded dirty....what's up with that?
which mix do you all use?
Ken

In the upcoming issue #114 of Black Powder Cartridge News, which is at the printers now, I think you will find the overall winner at Phoenix last month was using 12-1 in a 45-70 with grease groove BACO Money Bullets.
I could be wrong, but I don't recall anyone shooting a 40-70 in Long Range. At least they did not turn in an equipment list questionnaire.
Usually, the determining factor is how the individual, load and rifle perform, not so much what anybody else is doing.

Re: 16 or 20 to one
a good reply.....I shoot only at 100 yds, no long ranges near me here in Florida..
I'm just wondering what everyone thinks considering almost all, except the winner of course, loads in 2o to 1
I have a load of it and am thinking about using it...

kenny 20_ 1 is plenty hard unless you have a very long tapered nose on your bullet art

Re: 16 or 20 to one
thanks Art. I intend to try casting the bunch of 20-1 that I have on tap.
looks like it really won't make a difference at 100 yds. anyway..

Re: 16 or 20 to one
I know some shooters that use 30-1 successfully at silhouette.
At 100 yards you might try Rix Mix and save some of that 20-1

Not so much as the possibility that he has some good WW and could save the 20-1 should he venture out to a match one day.

Re: 16 or 20 to one
from what i have read, the 40/70 ss aka 40/65 remington was factory loaded with 20:1.
however those rifles with those twists and bullet lengths were never long range rifles.
think nose shape, maintainance of same when firing, for minimizing drag.
true long range rifles used between 10:1 and 14:1.
they were however considered king of mid range, and great for certain hunting applications.

Bottom line, whatever shoots best in your rifle, with that specific bullet and load. But that's up to you to find out...
