Better read the fine print.

As desert Deuce alluded to, some of the many requirements listed on the NPS site:

“Be willing to haul bison carcasses out of wilderness on foot without motorized assistance.”

“Provide own equipment, lodging, food, rifle (rifles must be at least .30 caliber with a bottlenecked cartridge), and non-lead ammunition (non-lead bullet that is at least 165 grains and is of a non-frangible design), and field dressing supplies.”

“Utilize park-approved, non-lead ammunition and firearms

Same thing in Montana with the "Prairie Reserve" hunts.....no lead bullets! Worried about 1 slug laying out on the plains some where. So there goes a traditional open range type hunt. Wonder if the NPS even allows for packing out with a horse?

Been hunting in Arizona since I was 8 years old and you couldn't pay me to go on this culling.

I have been watching this for the several years it has been in the making. Submitted written input twice. There is a reason that Game and Fish is not involved even though it has been established that the bison belong to Game and Fish. Think about that for a minute.
It appears to me a glowing example of a bureaucratic, feel good, politically correct, feelings instead of fact government bastardized program. To put it nicely.
There will be 25 "shooters" 12 of whom drawn by lottery, so what about the other 13 ? Notice how they will be selected is not revealed.
Will you get to keep any or all of the meat ? All, probably not, any, maybe.
The National Park Service in general is anti-gun, anti-hunter and if you read the fine print this is not a hunt in their minds.
Reportedly these animals have been crossed with domestic cattle and large bulls can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Think about walking that out and then having to share it with someone or even give it to someone that had nothing to do with the killing, dressing and removal of the meat.

I got to thinking about what things would be said on this forum if it existed (say) in 1950; think about what is not said in public anymore - not that the thoughts aren’t there, just that the thoughts have been driven underground and are only shared now in comfortable company. True change follows a coffin; think about what Buffalo hunts will look like 50 years from now?????

50 years from now there will be no hunts of any kind. If there is it will be with a string and stick.

Typical of the NPS to mismanage the wildlife so bad it comes to this . They did the same with elk in Wind Cave here in SD. Allowed the herd to increase to a point that was detrimental to the habitat then wanted selected hunters to go in kill cows, dress & quarter them, pack out on their back (no motorized vehicle) to give it away to some non hunting asswipe. To top it off most had cwd and weren't good for consumption to boot. It wasn't free either. No reality to those feds at all just dump the problem on joe a public's back. They screwed it up let them fix it. Bobw
