shim MVA tang sight
I like the MVA sights. I have an adjustable tang on my Shiloh using a Hadley adjustable eye piece.
I noted that it in not 'super tight' in the tang base. NOW< not that there is a problem, but I'm wondering if
a couple thousands there would register an inch or two at the 100 yard target.
SO.
I had a couple of TriggerShims.com shims and fit one on the right side of the sight in the base.
The screw is .0186 and I'd need a .019 hole to let it pass through.
the size that works is .003, and I'm sure .002 would work too.
I had to open up the hole with my Dremel a touch, but the sight is now
' Rock Solid in the base. up and down.
While this is what I had on hand,
I plan to order a couple to fit with a .440 width for the MVA.
I'll let you know how it does at the range.
really...it can't hurt.
and it took 5 minutes.....Ken

The retaining screw that holds the staff in place can be tightened to make the staff more rigid in position and in the detent.
It is most important for the forward and back position of the staff to produce a perfectly round image in the hadley disk when centering the front sight and that angle too is adjustable.
Even at 100 yards a dead wind zero is a benefit.

Re: shim MVA tang sight
It all works fine, Hadley has a centered sight picture.
Trigger Shims has a .189 x .419 shim in .003 that is on the way.
Lance is great to work with considering this is very short money.
just a trick to tighten things up.
Nothing wrong with the MVA, but I've done this on many sixguns with success.
Rugers in particular. Colt hammers love this trick. tightens the hand and action with a simple shim on the hammer screw.

Tighten the staff mounting screw, just a little bit.

when you tighten the mounting screw, you are putting a lot of pressure on the screw threads.
by shimming, it adds metal , invisibly, and the metal to metal fit is tightened, without
putting undue pressure on the threads.
it's a six buck fix and works very well.

Kenny,
I've tried to follow what you are doing, but am unable to. Pictures would help.

Re: shim MVA tang sight
OK, here is what I did.
I took my MVA tang sight off the base.
by removing the screw holding it on the base. first remove the spring, ez just unscrew the small screw and remove.
then I put it back together, but with a steel shim over the screw between the sight and the right side of the base. put the spring back in place.
Don't overthink it.
I took the sight off by unscrewing the hand screw....then put it back together with a 'washer' on the screw
between the sight and the sight base. thus, tightening the upper tang sight in the base.
took it to the range today and the groups really tightened.
only 24 shots but all centered and in about 2 inches.
this I think, eliminates any slight movement and drift in the tang sight.
cheap and easy.

Re: shim MVA tang sight
By eliminating any play, your sight will now wear faster. The spring returns the staff to the exact same position each time. Your staff is made to be folded down and returned to it's upright detent position. Don't make it too tight. I think you are solving a problem that does not exist.

Re: shim MVA tang sight
I have no idea why you needed to remove the spring to do that. I remove my sight at the end of each day and never touch the screw, doing so will change the vertical adjustment and you will need to 'plum' it every time, time consuming process. If you have the hand screw set right the staff will tip forward under recoil each and every shot.
I've been at this a bunch of years, been to the Nationals a bunch of times, shot the 'Q' with 600 shooters for many years and you are the 'first' person to need this fix. I think you are the one who is overthinking it. Sounds like a solution in search of a problem to me.

Re: shim MVA tang sight
I agree with the Deadeye and Woody, I think the sight on my LRE was bought in 2007, I wouldn't have any idea how many thousands of shots have went thru that gun with that sight. It's even been moved to different rifles thru the years, this week I was testing a BACO money bullet at 900 yds. and may have shot the best 5 shot group that ever come out of that rifle. I oil it from time to time, but other than that its just like it came from MVA.

The threads will handle it just fine.

Nope Lumpy, just put in the shim and it's as tight as a drum.
I could not tighten the screw any further without tools and I won't do that.
The first targets proved that it worked.
It's invisible, cheap, and it works. why not?

Because that's not the way it was designed to be by the Manufacturer and it's not right.

Re: shim MVA tang sight
If the staff still pivots freely, your shim is not hurting anything.
But, if your shim adds friction to the pivot, I believe that it is a negative.
Do what works for you.
