Steve,

Notice where he says this, "I could not tighten the screw any further without tools and I won't do that." That being the case it's already way too tight. You're right, do what you want but don't blame MVA when they refuse your warranty claim because you modified the product.

There is always the potential in anything mechanical that an out of spec. part got assembled in the finished sight but from what I hear it sounds like a case of a solution in search of a problem. As far as the group tightening that could be placebo effect which time and use will sort out.

Placing a shim on the pivot mount screw of his MVA sight may or may not be the best idea however, the sight belongs to him. He is obviously proud of the results and his impression is that his groups tightened after his modification. Since he is the owner of the sight and likes the results, then very well. If the shim damages the sight, it should be at his expense to repair or replace. Now I will break into a chorus of “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow.....”. My God, all this distain over a shim, let the man breath and enjoy his shimmed sight.

Steve S.,

The purpose of a forum is the exchange information and ideas. If he didn't want to know what other people thought of his idea then he should have kept it to himself. He has had recommendations to the contrary from some pretty respected people in the sport which is what you get when you post otherwise what is the purpose. He thinks he has a good idea, we think he is misguided. And who are you to tell me I can't support and help a fellow shooter? Now let's all sing 'Kumbaya' and have a nice day.

On one of my Winchester 94's a shimmed the rear Lyman sight with a flattened Gas check. I was only shooting out to 200 meters , but it worked well for that. My gunsmith at the time noticed the gas check and I was embarrassed that he found it. He said that was fine, but most shims he'd seen were cut from beer cans.

The great Lon Pennington shot at the national Lever gun silhouette match with a very old 22 that had black electrical tape holding the tang sight on...and he won the national championship.

The Great Brian Chilson wears lucky pants.

OK, for those of you. like me, that have nothing else to do. Here is the final on the shim on the tang of the MVA sight.

I had to do some minor sight adjustment, using my standard load, no changes there. and here is the final.

5 shots, then did the final 'tweak' of the windage, and fired the last three.

Yup, I know a three shot group doesn't prove a thing, BUT. there it is....

done now...Ken

You should set a mechanical zero.
Center the rear sight on '0' windage and move the front sight as needed.

I could do that Lumpy. OR. I could just leave it alone and glue the setting in place HA

Everything is nicely centered as it is, and I'll just play with it as is.

I have found the following.....
I have to hold very tight on the butt. pull back hard....to offset the hammer blow.
this alone cuts the groups in half.

I rang the barrel and set the front rest on the dead spot 4 inches from the muzzle.
I was using an expensive rest. heavy, firm...
but then went to a cross wood adjustable bench rest. This allows the rifle to recoil straight back and not bounce on the hard rest.

All of the above had an effect on the group size. three inches to under an inch at 100 yds.

This was painful to read.

Ah , stand your ground sd if that's what you believe. If you think it helps you than it probably does which is what placebo effect is. There is always the risk of contradiction for sharing an idea one has that might help someone else and I for one like to hear the thoughts (although I may not agree with the current application) because they almost always will turn the light on for some other project or problem father down the line.
