Sighting in Routine.

Post by LazyM »

When testing a new powder and/or charge, what is your normal routine? What yardage do you start with (200?)? Although not a big issue here, how do you compensate for wind, if at all? Do you adjust for elevation or just shoot your allotted number of shots? How many shots do you allot per group?

Yes, I know! I have been doing this awhile and, yes, I do have my own ideas (especially for my charge!), but is always nice to hear others input.

We shoot for groups at 200 meters. Once the testing starts we do not adjust anything. I look for 20 shot groups with just blow tube after every shot...then a pause after every 5 shots.

Test loads at 200yd. Start will loads at "0" compression, go up one grain at a time. Load about 8 rounds for the first powder charge since the barrel is clean. The rest of the powder charges are 6 rounds each. Move the sights about 3 mins. shoot another test load and repeat. I start with around 6 test loads.

I keep my targets, date them and put all the info. on them I can about the conditions and the test loads. Notes about the wiping solution and routine and so on. It is a running history of how you got to where you are now. What worked and what didn't work, whether that change hurt or helped the load. I have looked back thru my targets and found test loads I should have tried again and looked over it. It will keep you from repeating the same tests over again. It is easy to get lost if you are testing several different bullets, wiping solutions, primers and etc. you can forget what you have tried and what worked and what didn't. I put all the notes and info. I can on each target and keep it. I look back thru the targets often, and look for things I might have missed that I need to try again. Just the way I do it, a little extra work, but you will get out of this game what you put into it.
