Chop-saw to trim long brass?

Post by opencountry »

I remember reading here months ago of a shooter here buying a chop-saw from Harbor Freight for trimming 3 1/4” brass to 2 7/8”, etc. quickly and effectively. I can’t find that thread. I’ll be doing this. What are you using to ‘hold’ the brass with while cutting? Can you post a photo of the jig you were using, and the exact chop-saw you bought at Harbor Freight?

Thanks,
Robert

It might have been me, I don't know if it was or not. I have a Drill Master chop saw that has the jig built onto the saw. It is a mini cut off saw item# 42307.

Harbor freight $40 and I guess add shipping. E-bay 45 to 50 free shipping.

Coltsmoke - thanks for the reference. I just ordered one to cut the same thing: 3 1/4 to 2 7/8 Norma brass

I went to Harbor Freight and bought this chop saw. It’s #61204, and looks real good. Built-in jig.
Thanks all,
Robert

Why not buy 2.9 and trim?

Make a wood cradle to hold the brass case, 3/4 square with a 1/2 round groove in it. Just trimmed 100 Norma 45 basic cases.

Here is a short video I made showing the fixture I use in the HF mini chop saw. I make them for various case sizes as I need them.

Thank you, Steve. That’s a great instructional video. After seeing it I retuned the chop saw I bought today at Harbor Freight, then went on Amazon and bought the same saw you show, and three extra cutting wheels.

Thank you!

The Drill Master and the Harbor Freight are the same saw I believe. My harbor freight came with a jig when I bought it. One tip is to run the teeth on the blade into a bar of soap every so often. It makes for easier cuts, you can feel the difference. I am still on my same blade and have used it for a lot of years now. I do have a spare drive belt but have never used it either.

I bought one from HF to trim over 200 basic brass for my 45-110 . The tool works ok but the cutting wheel is junk it would not cut the brass so I removed the wheel and installed a 3" thin 3-M cutting wheel I had on it, it worked fine after that >you have to also remove the wheel safety guard for the 3" wheel yo fit.
