Calamity Jane with Sharps Rifle

Post by opencountry »

What’s your guess on the caliber of this ‘74? The cartridges in her belt should give an idea.

probably 44-40 or maybe 45 colt so she could use the readily available shot cartridges in her trick shooting
Actually they were probably cartridges for the revolver on her belt./?????

No, I think Beltfed is correct, those appear to be pistol rounds in the belt.

Yeah, I think you’re both right after all. I never thought of that.

Darn, I posted two other times on this and both are a no show, maybe third time's a charm?
Anyway, that is a Business rifle in what I thought was a .40-50 BN, but on a second look I think Beltfed is correct - Those appear to be pistol cartridges.

This picture has been around and it has been previously suggested that the photographer had that rifle and cartridge belt for props. Apparently there are other photos from that guy with the same gun in them. Not that it matters, but kind of interesting.

I don't know about the belt but the Sharps was supposedly a Business model 45-70
