making a threaded shoe

Post by mdeland »

About a year ago I was drilling and tapping a barrel for a friend to accept two scope blocks. I always use a barrel jig to assure that they are in line and square to one another and the action. Both the hole drilling and the tapping are done through hardened steel bushings to maintain square and plumb but even then disaster can rear it's ugly head on occasion in the form of tap failure. This happen on the fourth and final hole of this job. By the time I got the broken tap out the threads looked pretty rough so in keeping with normal practice I drilled out to the next size scope block screw size and finished up the job. Starting with 6 x 48 and re-drilling and tapping to 8x40.
All was fine until friend decided he wanted to turn the blocks around to get the scope closer to his eye.
All he needed do was drill out the block hole on that end big enough to use the larger 8x40 but he wanted them to all be the same size so I either had to re-drill and tap the other three to 8x40 or make a shoe so the fourth hole would again be 6x48.
My first attempt using and 8 x40 screw failed while tapping it to except the 6x48 screw because the wall of the larger screw was to thin and broke off while die threading it.
Next I tried some annealed O-1. I drilled and tapped for the 6x48 in the end of the larger drill rod to make the 8x40 shoe , leaving a screw in the tapped hole for crush support. I was able to get four threads length before the die twisted the O-1 off but realized this was enough thread purchase to make the shoe work.
I installed a 6x48 scope bock screw into the threaded 8x40 shoe with blue lock tite and the shoe into the barrel with Red loc-tite which has more strength. When both were set up I turned out the scope screw and the shoe remained in the barrel as per design.
One would need a magnifying glass to see the repair and I was very happy it worked out so well. I thought this might help some one else out of a similar fix. :D

Mike,

Are you using a Forrester Universal Sight Mounting Fixture or what are you using?

Oh, I get these ideas about how to fix stuff and have to try it out to see if it works. On occasion it does and so like to pass it along to who ever I might be able to help up the trail.
