Air gun

Post by Kurt »

Glenn brought up the air gun shooting matches. and I 'm watching the outdoor channel right now and they have a air rifle segment on.
Those air guns have really changed since I paid attention to them.
Those guys are having fun shooting that match. It's sort of like the race gun matches.

Air Guns are just plain fun. I have been looking into the BIG BORE air rifles. One, made in Texas ( who would have guessed) shoots a 500 grain 45-70 bullet!!!
My crosman .177 Silhouette Pistol is what my grandson learned how to shoot with. Silent, about 50 shots per fill and at 25 yards you can shoot aspirins with it !!

I think a pellet rifle is the ideal learning platform for new shooters.

Air rifles go back a long way.
The Lewis and Clark exposition had a I think .46 Cal. 20 or so shots repeating air rifle back in 1805. I cant remember who made that rifle, but they go back a long way.

I read a very well written article on that air rifle...a VERY deadly weapon and the company that made it had been in business for decades before that expedition.
Check out that Quigley bucket challenge. I'm going to shoot my 450 fps .177 cal pellet pistol at 75 meters today to make sure there's enough energy to knock over the 1/10 scale rams.

Several of the guys have .177 cal 10 meter guns that clock along at 550 fps...so they want enough energy to get the job done. Kinda like shooting a 38-55 vs 40-65. The .22 air rifle is ideal but the 177 cal will be minimal.
The 10 meter guns have GREAT sights with interchangeable inserts...so the iron sight shooters can get in practice also.

I watched that link Glenn.

Last night on the Outdoor Channel, I don't know what the range they were shooting those air rifles but they were knocking some pretty large plates and dueling tree plates around as well shooting exploding targets that looked a long way off.
