How many fps can you run 30-1 for a hunting load before severe leading occurs?

As fast as you want with Paper Patched bullets

Can't answer that specific question, but I've run 20:1 at 1350 fps for hunting without any leading. At that velocity, a bullet with a 5/16" flat nose expanded well, penetrated well, and killed very well.

The right answer is: "every rifle and load is different." Type of powder, type of lubricant, condition of bore, length of barrel. bullet diameter versus bore/groove diameter. Then there are the external factors like ambient air temperature and humidity. So, I guess the answer is that there really is no answer.

Actually shouldn't be a problem. Unless, you need a bunch of shots. 2 or 3, no problem. Might look at grease wad if you're planning on several shots.

I prelube the barrel for the first shot so that I don't need a fouling shot. 2 or 3 after that isn't a problem. You DO need to practice exactly the same way so that you know where 1-2-3 are going to hit the target.

I should have included IF you're shooting black powder. If you're talking smokeless..... Use smokeless lube and since I've never done that, you're on your own in that territory.

Since you’re asking how fast. That begs the question, what kind of powder are you using? Black or smokeless?

Black 45/110 . Just a question, looking for a sweet spot for Gov greasers.

Forget 30-1 even for hunting.

I use 20-1 for hunting and 16-1 for target work with PP loads for both. Loaded entirely different method for each application. This is in my 3 45-110s.

Thanks Kenny. I was just fooling around with the gov bullet and thought I'd ask. I'm using the 565gr bullet you designed to hunt with.

Just shoot that govt. bullet around 1250 or so. It will shoot through most anything you want to hit with it. Slow enough to not deform much but moving fast enough to put paid to most things pretty quick.

With Alberta Schuetzen Lube on GG bullets I can safely shoot up to 100 cast 20:1 or 30:1 lead:tin alloy bullets in a row (up to 1,850 fps) with smokeless powder with no leading - but cannot get black powder up to those velocities.

On my very first Creedmoor match in Raton years ago I was using 105 gr Swiss 1 1/2 with a 30:1 Paul Jones Creedmoor bullet in a 45-110 and the mandatory velocity check prior to the match revealed I was going 1425 fps and I was getting no leading.

Not positive Gary but I think I was using Bill Bagwell's Black Magic lube back then.
