49 mold BA
I'm using the 408 400 mold from BA in my Shiloh 40 70 SS, and I'm thinking (again) of trying the BA 409/400 mold
JIM 409400M4. $195. It's always out of stock.
they have the 460 grain but that seems heavy for me.
"What do you all use in the 40 70SS for a bullet? and do you think that the 409 vs the 408 will make a difference?
thanks..Ken

Their molds are usually out of stock and are made to order. It don't take long depending on how busy they are. My longest was a couple weeks.

I've used them before and I like them.. just wondering if the 409 is better than the 408 for the Shiloh .408 40 70 ss bore?

Re: 49 mold BA
I don't think you will see any difference. How long is the 460? I would not want to be over 1.400

Re: 49 mold BA
Hi Coltsmoke. I would get the 400 not the 460. I think the 460 may be too long....I can only shoot at 100, so long range is not the thing.

Re: 49 mold BA
the 409 460 money grain is 1.515
the 409 400 money grain is 1.40 long and weighs .415
looks like the 409 400 M4 is the one. Ken
just for record, my current BA 408 400 M4 weighs in at 395

Think you're going down the rabbit hole here Kenny. What more is there to gain as you already claim you have achieved a 3/8" group after shimming your sight. http://www.shilohrifle.com/forums/viewt ... 1&start=15 At a 100 yards almost anything will work. Silhouette is 200 to 500 meters and Gong shoots go out to 1000 yards. Is there no where in Florida where you can get past a 100 yards?

Re: 49 mold BA
Kenny,
My consideration between a .408 vs .409 would be how well the bullet fit my fired brass, then how well either shot from my rifle. Either one would probably work, but one may “fit” and release more consistently……. Allan

Re: 49 mold BA
Don't buy the mold, someone on here owns it, get them to mail you about 20 of them and try them out. I don't think they will shoot any better than what you have.

Re: 49 mold BA
Too bad I did not read this earlier. Just sold my 409400M4 mold today at the Ship match. It doesn't shoot that well in my 16" twist barrel while the 409430C2 does.

KennySD,
Can we presume that your Shiloh 40-70SS is a 16 twist? Helps to know

Re: 49 mold BA
Heavier and longer is the wrong direction. Run some ballistic calculations and you'll see that for that 16 twist you need a bullet less than 1.5" long. I had Brooks make me a mould a couple years ago that drops a 1.318 bullet that weighs 370 grains. This has solved my issues at 800 to 1000 yards. My Paul Jones 420gr Creedmoor would not work well past 800 yards. Let me know if you want to try some. I'm pretty sure I still have your address here somewhere and would be glad to send you some.

Re: 49 mold BA
The heavy .408 BACO Money runs right at 447 grs with 15-1 alloy using 95/5 solder to drop it from 20-1.
This shoots very well at 500-600 yards.
However it is in. 1-14 twist Shiloh barrel.
Heavy you need a faster twist to accommodate the longer bullet.
As My old friend Jeff mentioned.

Re: 49 mold BA
I suggest a maximum 1.325" long bullet for a 16 twist, whether it be in a 40-65 or a 40-70SS.
