Kenny, Not trying to pick apart your write-up, but you say that "A single event gave birth to the NRA of the United States and long range international competition Shooting". The NRA was established in November, 1871 and where responsible for getting the Creedmoor range built but they actually turned the "Irish Challenge" down and that's why the ARC took it up. Gutsy move on their part.

No problem, I should probably worded it that it birthed NRA’s involvement and governing of Competition Shooting. It gave them a real reason to exist.
May I suggest reading America and her Guns published by the NRA it goes a great bit into the NRA’s involvement.

Just to clarify, the Elcho Shield is a ‘home countries’ international team match between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It originated in a challenge between Rifle Volunteers of England and Scotland and was first competed for in 1862. Ireland were allowed to compete in 1865 and won the trophy for the first time in 1873, leading to the subsequent challenge to the USA and the Creedmoor era of international matches. Wales later were allowed to enter.
