Next time, remember to activate that solitary brain cell and take it with you.

May be difficult to set a dead wind zero without it activated.

Now you are assuming we actually have calm winds here.
Last one if those I saw, it was about -30 deg.

I'll just tap the front sight over a tad and hope for the best.

DD,
Since I was at my limit on powder, I decided to back off 5 grains and drift the sight over.
evidently they offset each other because the first shot today was right with the last two shots yesterday.

Didn't get centered in the bullseye, so no score today either !!

Typical Wednesday load test. 68grains looks pretty good ,69 looks better.
1874 Shiloh Creedmoor #2 ,45-70, 30 inch barrel, MVA midrange iron sights .
Baco 520M2 GG, 69grains Swiss 1.5, Fed 150m. 11.12 string measure.
Got a little excited and shanked the last shot at 6, oh well Next Time!

YES, the grass is always greener in the PNWet! And the bluest skies you've ever seen are in Seattle. unfortunately it is rainy an overcast 10 month's of the year. Folks have been known to stop and look up at the Sun on a nice day and ask What's That?

MrE, out of curiosity. Have you run a ladder test with that rifle starting about 56.0 grains and increasing in half grain increments?

Sure, if those groups you show are fired at 200 yards the result is good enough for silhouette, however, sometimes doing ladder loads beginning about 56.0 grains up to say 71.0 grains may tighten even those groups.

Just a thought.

DD
No, not with the 74. I usually start out with 8 or 10 shot groups and work up in 1.5 or 2 grains then refine from there. I've done ladder testing with the Ball-Wall 40-65 but I really need an interpreter to read those kind of chicken bones, so I went back to the old way of incremental loads testing.
What kind of a wad stack do suggest for a 56 grain load. That's going to be well below no compression height, something like a fiber, poly, paper, then bullet stack?

Using Swiss 1.5, enough wads to give .105" compression with the bullet seated about 30-60 thousandths into the rifling.
As you go up in powder volume, keep the same compression and cartridge overall length by reducing wad stack.

I have witnessed match winning world championship shooting under poor conditions at 600 yards with a 45-70 using 57.0 grains of Swiss 1.5. That's why I recommend starting below that at 56.0 grains and working up.

You may hit another sweet spot around 60.0 - 62.0 grains.

Listen to the target.
