Loading .40-65 Win.

Post by TexasMac »

I just finished loading 28 rounds of .40-65 using 52grs to 64grs of Swiss 2f through a drop tube to run a ladder test in a Shiloh Sharps 1874. In a previous test I had determined 60.5grs was one of the sweet spots. I’m running the test again to verify the previous results. 64grs resulted in 0.340” compression. The powder the ODG’s used that established 65grs as the standard must have been using much denser powder than today’s stuff. At 65grs the compression would be 0.365”. Although I’m using reformed Rem. cases, even with the thinner wall Win. cases compression would be significant.

Wayne,
Here is some more info.
45-70 formed, fire formed to my relatively tight 40-65 chamber.
I loaded 65.0 grains of powder thru 24" helical drop tube:
Then measured from case mouth to powder. Also, measured case mouth to the cannelure groove on case if present.

WW FF R-P FF Rem-UMC balloon head

Swiss 1.5F Lot 240-406 0.483" 0.315" 0.412"
To cannelure gr. NA 0.5" 0.524"

Swiss 2F Lot 250-504 0.462" 0.468" To case mouth.

These happen to be OLD Dense lots of Swiss.
But, I expect more like the "good old" early powders "back in the day"
Should be plenty of room even for those deep seated GG bullets.
And, has been mentioned, plenty of room for the original loadings of the 40-65 with 260 grain bullets, even without compression.

Lastly Wayne, I switched over to WW formed cases to get that additional powder in.
I am shooting my 371380E bullet over 78 grains of the above mentioned lot of Swiss 1.5 to clock 1402fps
and 74.5 grains of a newer lot of 1.5 to get about 1375fps.

Thanks Arnie.

What I failed to mention is the bullets are from BACO's 409420M2 mould weighing in at 414.8gr with 16.6:1 alloy & seated so the 1st band (tapered) touches the leade. These bullets are 1.450" long & the resulting cartridge length is 2.960".

I had forgotten that 260 gr bullets were the original loads, which would not be a problem with 65grs of powder.

BTW, 60.5grs of 2f results in 1270 fps.

Wayne,
How deep into the case are those 409420M2 bullets seated into the case in order that the tapered first/top band
is touching the leade? I presume that is how your loads are set up.

Yup, that's how I load. It's 2.960" COL - 2.1" case length = 0.86" in the case.

My math is .86 of the bullet is outside of case . Bullet length of 1.450 " minus .86" equals. 59" seating depth. Tim.

Tim,

I stand corrected. Your math is correct. The seating depth is 0.59".
