Dean,

The past few days I have been really getting to know this mould again and what I have come up with is using a wave washer a.k.a . spring washer. It allows me to finger tighten when the desired length is reached then tighten without moving. I cast 50 perfect 16:1 @1.35” for 318 grs. -+ .5 gr. bullets today and are wrapped in 9 lb onion skin drying. I was hoping closer to 330 grs. I also learned that what I thought was to thick of paper for a .395” bullet and it caused me problems dry wrapping, wet patching made them a perfect fit In a fired case. I plan on doing enough different lengths to see what the 40-70 SS likes best, she’s a snobby rifle and only Swiss has ever shown the best.

The original load for the 40-70 SS was 65 grains of Fg a 330 grain pp bullet along with the cards and lube wad. I have several 40-70s both original and new Shilohs. To knock down the steel targets I went to a 405 grain pp bullet .392 diameter. 65 grain of Fg Swiss. I tried 65 grains of 1 1/2 OE and my groups looked like a shotgun pattern. Been shooting the new 77 the last few days picked it up last fall got sight settings for 200, 300, 350, and 400 yards,

Mr. Orville ,

Thank you for the historical facts on the original loading . Albeit we are playing with modern .40 cal barrels at least most are ,I wonder how different harmonically the original barrel dimensions vs modern are, coupled with no real source for proper brass plays on getting the best out of them. Jamison is the only one that made good brass for the modern barrels and chambers,RMC brass is soft and already getting failures on the expensive ‘Everlasting’ stuff . I am going to see if I can’t get the mythical accuracy with a 330 gr. Original Sharps Profile PP bullet in a modern .400”X .408” 1:16 ROT barrel. It’s been a long learning curve for this cartridge for me.
What cartridge did you get your 1877 chambered in ? No one has ever said their Shiloh 1877 was a disappointment.

My 77 is 40-70. The original rate of twist was 1-18. Stop out 1452 highway 16 east I can fix you up with some 330 grain bullets, one of my older Shiloh’s has the 1-16 twist it shoots the 330 grain ok. The original chambers are tighter (smaller) then the current chambers.

I would really like to hear how this works out.
My 77 is 40-70with a 16 twist. I have done a lot of head scratching to get stuff to work in it. It has the bigger standard chamber in it.

Havent played with it much but, ive been in the process of setting up a 40-70 (16 twist) for my wife to shoot and so far the Jim 403380E has worked very well with a .060poly wad, 80gr of 1.5f swiss, fed 210m and Hornady brass. That load shot a 10 shot 1.05in group at 100.
