Re: .40 cal short mould
I have not tried any of the BACO moulds, that looks like what I am trying to do, thank you Don for the explanation. That helps , just trying to get a short bullet that will be good in the 40-70 SS and the 40-50 SBN.

Re: .40 cal short mould
Randy you're welcome. One thing you might want to do is call Tom Outland over in Worland. They shoot greasers in 40-50 bn.
My 40-70 likes bullets about 1.2 inches long real well. Of course those aren't much for anything past 600 yards and don't particularly behave well in the wind.
Depending on what you're plans are for the little 40 you may be better off with a seperate bullet for it, and another for the other 40's.

I have a 40-70 2.1" bn , neck is .15" shorter than a 40-70 2.25" SBN it is an older Shiloh with a slow twist 1 in 18 or 19. also have a 40-90 2 5/8" sbn with a 1 in 16" twist. I use a 40 tgbs Kal tool mold for both .392". I've shot them at 330 in the 2.1" but it prefers them at 370 gr as does the 2 5/8" sbn. It's an adjustable mold ppb make them as long or short as you like about 280gr to 415 or so. Nope don't belong to the mold of the month club. Pm powdetburner for info

Re: .40 cal short mould
I just revisited the Steve Brooks adjustable .395” Original Sharps profile bullet I had 15 loaded up with 82 grs. Swiss 1.5 bullet was 1.35” about long 345+- grs. Wrapped in onion skin paper. Normally they are very tight and require a push with a seating tool. Bought a bottle of Jojoba oil ,few drops on the nose gets to the paper and no tool necessary to seat . I just put a new front sight on the rifle a MVA #115 and needed a dead wind zero, today was perfect. Took a few shots to get it in the on a black @200 SR-1 target. The rest all clustered nicely in 3.0-3.5” in the black ,fouling was almost wet with a nice lube star.
The problem I have with this mould is it’s constant moving down and bullets ending up at subtle different lengths . I put a stainless steel wave washer on the adjusting nut and it now holds a desired length.
The jojoba oil is the key for this bullet and mould, thank you Don I finally tried it and it works ! Genius level stuff.

Glad it worked for you Randy. When that jojoba works it really works, but when it don't....
If you use a Q tip to wipe it on the exposed patch it goes on smoother.

Randy the only way to really get ready for bptr is build what you think is a good load and head to a match
You’ll figure out more by the end of your second relay than spending a year on the piece and quiet of your home range
Always glad to help

I’d like to participate to just observe the spotters to learn how the evaluate the wind and make their calls accordingly.

Don I think I am there , spend a little time with the sticks on the ground and confirm sight settings . Next Worland match I believe would be a good place to start.

Re: .40 cal short mould
I would really like to see my 1877 before then, it’s my dream rifle for many years since I was made aware of them by Carmen Axtel . She let me shoot one of hers and I was smitten with the rifle but could never afford one of hers.

Re: .40 cal short mould
Randy , you can put a nut on the adjuster steam.
Just close the mould tight before snugging it’s up.
