You are a new guy here, welcome. Next point, Shiloh buys and pays for this website for the benefit of it's customers, and others who aren't customers of Shiloh realize much benefit of the know how and advice of black powder shooters who visit this site and give others their help. That is it's purpose, but coming on here and giving advice on how to load large capacity Sharps cases with smokeless is contrary to what Shiloh has all ways advocated." Large cases are made for bp and if you want to shoot smokeless use a cartridge that has smokeless factory ammo loaded for it. 45-70, 38-55,30-40 etc." It's their policy and it's pretty simple. While your load might be good , offering it here on the Shiloh site is in bad taste, it's against their policy. bobw

I have seen pictures and heard horror stories of what can and has happened by using smokelessin the cases larger than a 45-70. Some people have been badly injured when something goes wrong. I don't like hearing when fellow shooters get injured. I believe Shiloh warranties their 45:70 for smokeless but nothing larger. Shoot straight be safe!

I don't think I've ever seen a "longer" .45 Shiloh that has blown up from smokeless. Can't think of one. Never actually heard of one either.

Blown up cast ballards, yes, but I don't think even they were "longer" .45s.

Then have at it I value the safety of myself and fellow shooters and am on who complies with the manufactures recommendations. Shiloh dies not recommend it do I listen to what they say.

Brent,

Kirk has a blown up Shiloh in his office, a 45-110.

3 shots of a case full of 5744 did the deed. It’s rather interesting, the shooter was unharmed.

Well, there you go. A case full of 5744 will do it in pretty much any rifle.

I think that's the biggest problem with loading smokeless in thee 2 7/8 in case. It's has case capacity beyond the 458 lott, that cartridge operates at around 60K pressure,, to much room for error using many of the smokeless powders in that long ol sharps case.

I just looked at Kirk's rifles in the Bozeman Museum thread - don't understand why anyone would or could bring themselves to put smokeless in one of these beautiful iconic rifles.
