Harris MN 1000 yds BPTR match

Post by BFD » Mon Jul 29, 2019 2:12 pm

Are any of you planning on going to Harris, MN (Gopher Rifle and Revolver Club) for their 2-day 1000 yds match? I've been there for several years in a row now and I'll be headed that way again. It is a really nice range that few people know about. Just about 45 minutes north of the Cities. They have a covered 1000 yd line and will be shooting only 1000 yds, so it's all shaded, dry and 10 ft to your truck.

I have always shot muzzleloaders there, but this time, I think I will shoot cartridge rifles instead.

BTW, if you get there early enough of Friday, you can do a fair bit of shooting to test a load or two.

Aug 17 and 18?

I am planning on it!

I have not actually seen a flyer, so I hope I have the dates right, and hope there is no need to pre-register.

I will be shooting 45-70 cartridges, with those seemingly much-reviled grease groove bullets.

Minnesotan's are not big advertisers. But they put on a good match and a great Saturday lunch break.

Sorry about your bullets. I could bring a few extra well dressed ones for ya. At least for photo ops. They will really make you look and feel much better. :)

I found out about it from a few good-natured Minnesotans at the Quigley match.
I plan to show up Friday morning, and get a few practice shots in.

I have a reservation at the Americinn in North Branch. The wife and dog may be along for the ride, and then we would head up to the Keweenaw Peninsula for a few days of sight-seeing afterwards.

I haven't even been using black powder for an entire year yet. I may very well try paper-patching in the future, but haven't got to it yet.

Who do you contact for info on this match ? Wife & I have wanted to check out this range. I found the Gopher Rifle & Revolver Club website but not much info---looks like need to log in to see info ? The date is correct by their calendar. Is there a practice day & is there a place to camp on range ? (We have small 16' travel trailer) With fewer long range matches we need to look for new places----Harris looks about the same mileage from MI as to Lodi. Anyone with info please post.

Hello All,

The long range match at Harris, MN is August 17 & 18. On Friday the 16th, we meet at the Stuga Kafee at 9:00 AM for some breakfast before we arrive at the range about 10:00 AM. About noon we are finished with setup and the fun begins.

The match consists of four 1K relays. 15 shots for score with unlimited sighters during each relay. If we have ML shooters in attendance, we usually extend the relays for a pair of shooters to finish a relay. With four shooters per target, that gives us two people per target in the pits. This is not a sanctioned NRA match, so the shooters meeting is normally where we flesh out exact timing of the relays, target marking, etc... The last match we held, we allowed a radio for each target, so if you have a radio then bring it along. The safety meeting starts about 8:00 AM so we can get set in the pits and be ready to start on the firing line at 9:00 AM.

Dave Newell, makes the Saturday lunch. We take an hour on Saturday for lunch, but on Sunday we do not break for lunch, so you need to eat while in the pits or spotting. The aim of the weekend is to do our best to shoot well, and have some fun.

There is a campground for RVs or Tents. I think there is 125 volt 20 amp receptacle at the camp sites. Some shooters in the past have stayed in the Red Shed instead of pitching a tent. The
Red Shed is right on the 1K firing line.

Dave Newell's phone number is 612-720-8263

Keep on hav'n fun!

By the way, I'm pretty bad with remembering names, but I'm pretty sure that MikeT is one of the good-natured Minnesotans that I met at Quigley this year. Really looking forward to being there!

Aviator, I met you and Brian at the Restwel. I have been attending the Q for twelve years now with Bob Saathoff.
He remembers names much better than I do. You will recognize more Minnesota shooters from the Q when you get to Harris.

Keep on hav'n fun!

If there are any Shooters planning on coming to Harris early on Friday and want to hang around at the club house Friday evening, let me know with a p.m. I'm planning on bringing the grill, cooking some brats, a good pot of beans and my wife said she'll make us some potato salad. Good summer food. I'll pick up a watermelon too. Bob Saathoff
