Desert International Long Range Black Powder Target Rifle Championship

Post by desert deuce » Sun Jul 18, 2021 1:10 am

Yes fellow shooters, as promised, the planning for the March 21-31, 2022, Shoot-a-Palozza at Phoenix, Arizona, is in the final stages.
The Match Bulletin, course of fire and entry information is being perfected as I tap out this message.
The "plan", as plans go, is to have the information posted here on Shiloh Forum and the AZWINS web site by September 1, 2021, with entries to open October 1, 2021. Since we are anticipating significant participation from foreign shooters post mark dates will be important.

As of today, we are limited to 48 target rifle competitors. We would like to increase that number and may be able to do so. With that in mind entries will be accepted on a first come first served basis. You snooze you loose. Possibly may have a wait list.

The course of fire will be the same in a different sequence as was requested by the 2021 competitors attending plus a long range sight in day which was also requested.

AND, as far as we know, it remains the largest and most comprehensive Black Powder Cartridge and Muzzle Loader Match on Earth.

First Draft of Course of proposed course of fire below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shooters Meeting 7:45 AM each day at designated firing line

March 21st & 22nd A squadded silhouette match will take place. 40 record shots
each day at the silhouette range immediately West of the 1,000 yard range.
8:00 AM – 9:00 AM pick up competitor packets at range. Early registration
recommended. Space limited. First entered first squadded.

March 23rd .22 Long Rifle Chambered Rifles with .22 Long Rifle Ammunition Only.
A.- All shooting from the 200 yard line firing points. 3x20=60 shot aggregate
B.- Standard Mid Range 200 yard target from 200 yards
C.- Reduced 300 yard target from 200 yards
D.- Reduced 600 yard target from 200 yards
E.- Two classes, .22 LR BPTR Rifle and .22 LR Open Rifle, iron or scope sights
F.- .22 BPTR Rifles Cross Sticks or Wrist Rest, .22 LR Open Sand Bags Only.
Please provide your own sand bags.
G.- 20 shots for record each distance with 4 sighter shots each 20 shot string.
H.- 60 minutes for two shooters to fire 20 record shots each, then pit change.
I.- Walk on shooters exempt the administration fee. Enter at firing line day of match
with exact change in U.S. Currency to receive score card. 48 Maximum number of
shooters for this match. Ironman entries get priority squadding.

DAY ONE OF THE IRONMAN MATCH

March 24th & 25th, 500 & 600 yard matches on designated mid range targets.
A.- 3x10 record shots each distance each day for a 60 shot aggregate.
B.- One 3 minute preparation period plus 50 minutes for two shooters to complete
firing of each 10 shot record string. Pair firing permitted.
C.- Limit 4 non convertible sighter shots Cartridge Rifles & Muzzle Loaders.
D.- Pit Change after each pair fires their 10 record shots. Whomever fired first in the
previous relay fires second in the next relay.
E.- Since all firing will be from one yard line each day shooters may choose to leave
their equipment on the firing line (not firing point) between relays.

March 26th, Long Range Squadded Practice for sight settings. Report to pits by 7:45 AM.
A.- Pair firing, 3 shooters to a firing point with 3 shooters pulling 1000, 900, 800 yards
in that order from same firing point on same target.
B.- 65 minutes for three shooters to fire unlimited sighting shots each distance, pit
change after 65 minutes or all shooters on relay complete sighting shots.
C.- Remember to take your equipment with you after each relay because you will be
reporting to a different firing line for your next relay.

March 27th & 28th, 800 & 900 yards on Long Range Target.
A.- Two 15 round strings for record each day, 1.5 hour relays for two shooters.
B.- Unlimited sighters for cartridge rifles.
C.- Shooters must declare when going for score. Spotters allowed for cartridge
shooters.
D.- Muzzle loaders, USIMLT Rules, self spotting and scoring, first hit on paper is first
recorded sighter shot, up to five convertible sighters, reverse count. May snap caps
and load barrel during preparation period, apply final cap after assuming firing
position.

March 29th & 30th, Steve Rhoades Memorial World Championship from 1,000 yards.
A.- Two consecutive days 3x10=30 record shots each day.
B.- 60 minutes for two shooters plus one 3 minute preparation period.
C.- Cartridge Rifles unlimited sighters with spotter/scorer.
D.- Muzzle loaders, USIMLT Rules, self spotting and scoring, first hit on paper is first
recorded sighter shot. May snap caps and load barrel during preparation period,
apply final cap after assuming firing position.

March 31st, Final day Steve Rhoades Memorial World Championship 1,000 yard match.
A.- Two relays, 2x10=20 shots for score for an 80 shot three day championship
aggregate.
B.- No spotter, no coach, only a score keeper. Shooter is self spotter.
C.- Shooter limited to 3 sighter shots, first shot to hit paper is sighter shot #1.
D.- 3 minute preparation plus 45 minutes for two shooters to fire sighters and ten shots
each for record.
E.- Pair firing is permitted. Muzzle Loaders may snap caps and load barrel during
preparation period. Muzzle loaders may cap loaded rifle only when in firing
position. No sighter conversions.

The purpose of this match is to provide a high quality competitive experience that is fun for the shooters. Shooters not having fun and maintaining a positive attitude can expect to be ostracized heavily by their fellow competitors.

The Ironman Match consists of the aggregate of scores from 500, 600, 800, 900 & 1,000 yards.

Target assignments for Ironman Competitors will be assigned on March 24th. Don’t forget to put the name of your shooting buddy on your entry form and he yours.

Several shooters attending 2021 requested combining the Silhouette, .22 and mid range matches in a block as they were not and may not have long range capable rifles by 2022.
Thinking the same rifle and load for silhouette is viable in mid range and showing a strong interest in the .22 match that change was made.

Numerous requests for a long range sight in day was included prior to shooting the long range matches and has been scheduled on March 26th. Make sure you bring enough ammunition.

Awards and Banquet is scheduled for March 31st, time and place to be announced.

We are presently limited to 48 shooters for the black powder and .22 target matches. First come first served. Entry priority goes to competitors entering all seven black powder target Ironman matches. That 48 limitation may change so I will maintain a stand by list if entry is early. Late entries will be returned unless arrangements are made well in advance.

The Silhouette Range capacity and condition is presently unknown. Could possibly be less than 30 shooter capacity...again, first come first served. Get your entry in early.

Curious, Zack,
Will you allow a bench or table class with bench crosssticks and no rear bag just fire off the shoulder?

Kenny if you follow the links far enough, it looks like they will allow bench rest for those that can't shoot prone, but doesn't look to be a seperate class?
Looks to be a good match

To answer, sort of, Kenny's question and affirm Rock Slinger's comment, more or less.

We decided early on not to have categories or classes or require membership in any organization to come shoot.

It is just show up and shoot. Muzzle Loaders and Cartridge Guns just like back in 1874 at Creeds Moor except on paper targets.

Also, early on it was agreed than any shooter unable to fire from the prone position could use a bench with rest or bench sticks, of course no rear bag so that was/is already in the program. Bench and rest provided by the competitor.

The whole purpose is for the competitor to show up with their favorite rifle and load to have a great time at a quality match that is fun to shoot in.

The idea of allowing a Junior Class has so far been moot since no Juniors 18 or under have sent in entries. However, in the event two or more Juniors 18 or under do enter timely that idea will be revisited thinking we need to encourage as many young ones as possible to join in. For our purposes with this group that most likely involve grandchildren and great grand children.

Of course great great grandchildren are welcome also, to shoot as a Junior one only needs to be 18 or under, not a relative of a shooter.

We are attempting to reschedule the silhouette match. There was/is a scheduling conflict at the venue.
As of today it has not been rescheduled or cancelled. Still working on it.

Rescheduling the silhouette match failed, so, the silhouette match is cancelled. Rats!

The final drafts of the Match Bulletin and the Entry Form are getting close to being sanctified and published. Hopefully this month.

When they are finalized I will post them here on Shiloh Forum and on AZWINS web site.
