Daughter's New Shiloh

Post by PacRATT »

I just received my daughter’s #1 Sporter in 40-65W. It was 8 weeks to the day from Shiloh to Northbound Sports to Prophet River to ME. Great people to deal with.
My daughter loves the rifle, another work of art. Now we just need some trigger time before the CSI.
Thank you to all the people at Shiloh.

Roger:

Will she bring it to the first May shoot at CW Quarterhorses?
We need pictures of the rifle and her with a smile on her face.

Hello Roger,
I hope that your daughter enjoys her new rifle. A really nice calibre. I am giving my 38-55 Mini Sharps rifle to my daughter, too small for me but my daughter is on the small side, should do her OK just for fun plinking.
Cheers,

My daughter got to shoot her Sharps for the first time. Only 10 rounds before it stared raining. 5 shots off the bench, 5 shots off the mat. Hope we get more trigger time before the CSI.

Hi Gary,
Alyssa loves the rifle. The fit and finish is outstanding. She had no trouble with recoil but found the 11.5lbs hard to hold offhand. She will need different glasses that sit higher on her nose. She shots the light .22RF offhand very well, just needs to develop some upper body strength to hand the Shiloh.

The folks at Prophet River are great to deal with. Last year they imported an original 1885 with double set triggers for me. This summer I've got another 1885 in the works.

What bullet is your daughter using in that .40-65? The Saeco #740 works extremely well in mine.

gunlaker,

Thought I would add my $.02 in here as some additional info.

I have a C. Sharps 1875 30" in .40-65. Load is 52gr Scheutzen 2F, .030 fiber wad and a BACO JIM409420 Money 2 in 20:1. Actual weights have been 427-430. I have NOT cast these myself but will be set up for that later this summer.

I recently bought some of BACO's .409" Ceedmore bullets at 426gr so am looking forward to lubing, loading and shooting them also.

Good luck.

Jerry

I am using a mould Steve Brooks cut for my 10 years ago, Creedmoor .40cal. 1st band cut down to .403” base .4095” nose .398” as cast out of 30:1. Normal weight 410 gr.. I size/ lube .409”. This mould was made for a 40-65W Pedersoli I sent Steve a chamber cast of. The Shiloh has a tighter chamber and bore than the Pedi. Pin gauged at .400” bore at the chamber and .399” at the muzzle. Groove is .408”. Bullet shows good grp. on paper at 200yds. but 500M will tell the story.

I recently recovered 2 bullets from my daughter’s Shiloh that I had fired into a soft snow bank back in Feb. I measured them with my mic and got the following:
Nose=.398” with shadows of the rifling all a round
1st band=.400”
Base band=.408”
Base had nice sharp edges, no Finning and a very slight cupping

BTW - as an add on, I've successfully hit gongs out to 805 yards using the BACO JIM409420 Money 2 bullets. Have not had a chance to group on paper beyond 100 yards, but have <3" groups at 100 yards.

Great to see your daughter got a chicken with her new rifle.
I hope she had a great time at the 2014 Canadian Shiloh Invitation shoot.

Thanks for posting the Pics, Rick.
I made the right choose giving my daughter the Sharps and she could not have a better mentor than Rick Smith.
