change barrels; I have questions

Post by wyoduster »

1st question; I have and maybe this isn't the right forum but... Any Idea what is involved with sending one of my Shiloh's back to be rebarreled? Involved I mean: time, cost, ect..
I'm wanting a 40-70 and can't seem to find one. and don't want to wait for a new one.
2nd question; I saw a Shiloh with interchangeable barrels today. How can that be done? Never saw it on the website..

You need to call them. MT has had telephone service since the late 20's I believe.

You call them and get scheduled in to ship your rifle. If you keep the same barrel contour on the rifle it won't involve the expense of a new forearm. Cost about 750, and takes 3-4 months.
A switch barreled gun would be something done by a gunsmith (hopefully a real one not a gun parts changer with a Harbor freight lathe)

Not sure what kind of "switch barrel" Shiloh you saw. Was it just a rifle with 2 barrels, or was there some specialized mechanism for swapping barrels?

It's not terribly difficult to change barrels on a Shiloh, if both are properly fitted to the action, but also not something you'd do at the range.

I recently had a 26" 50-90 heavy weight barrelled Hartford changed to a 30" heavy weight 45-70 cost was $750 plus shipping both ways it took just about 5-6 months. I had them do some other work too which added another $300 to the cost and may be why it took a little longer.

My suggestion, like others suggested to you is to call them and talk about the details and what you want done. The more you want the longer it will take. Oh and I would order one of their rifle cases and they will ship it to you in a cardboard box. Then just ship your rifle in that case and box. I had one so that was what I used to ship my rifle.

Some years ago I rebarrelled an early Farmingdale Shiloh that the owner had someone fit an extra barrel to and he occasionally swapped barrels to suit whatever he wanted to shoot. Both barrels had forearms. Both barrels had loosened the threads from being put on and off the frame so that they did not tighten up properly and accuracy suffered. I installed a new 45/70 barrel and he still has it and has never wanted to swap barrels again.

Thanks for all the advice and information.

Think I'll just keep "my eyes to the skyline and my nose in the wind" and one will come up for sale.

I guess my observation would have to be, as you already have how many?
Six? Eight? Or have you bought a few more since the last time we shot together?

Why don't you just have them make you one, with extra fancy presentation grade wood, gold inlay, and a big long MVA scope (cause your getting old) 8)

Merry Christmas my Friend, Glad to see you back.

Hey old Buddy...
I do have a Fancy engraved one in a 40-70 but i never shoot it. don't want to scratch it......
I'm ready to shoot this year.. Dee and I bought a camper and a bigger truck so we can make most of the shoots..and of course Ridgway is closer now too.
But I do want to shoot Shippensburg also Its only 2+ hours away.
SO better carry an extra bottle with you this year to support my habit...... or maybe just a extra yuengling or two..

I would just order a .40-70 and use it as a designated rifle for that caliber.
I just had a CPA build with the switch option in mind for a .22 and a .44-75 Ballard caliber and I'm already considering sending one of the barrels back and have them put it on another stocked action.
Right now the barrel screws on tight, in fact it's so tight I have to use a strap wrench to get it to break loose. I want it to stay this way.
