Efficiency of 1863 breech compared with 1874?

Post by Naphtali »

Shiloh makes .50-caliber barrels available on 1874s and 1963s, barrels being as close to identical as is possible since they are made of same material, heat treat, and bore-rifling interior specifications.

With like chamber capacities (cartridge capacities), black powder brand and size, barrel lengths, and bullets I surmise 1863s will deliver lower velocity because of gas leakage around the breech. If lower velocity is reality, how much of a loss would be expected? Or a slightly different perspective might be how much additional powder would an 1863 require to match its 1874 lookalike?

If my query is too convoluted, please do your best to get my meaning if you reply. I'm trying to find out how much less efficient is the breech of 1863s compared with an otherwise identical 1874 - or is it?
