40-65 barrel demensions

I have a Shiloh in 40-65. I also have an 1886 Winchester in that cal. which needs a liner in the barrel. I'm having trouble finding reliable information about the proper chamber and barrel data in the Winchester. What are land and grove size in the
Shiloh? What is the twist rate? What is the shortest bullet you expect to stabilize in the Sharps?

Loophole,

0.400"/0.408"; standard twist is 16", over-stabilization is not normally an issue (think 40 gr bullets in an 8" twist .223, which shoot quite well even though greatly over-stabilized), so any reasonable weight bullet will work fine.

I've shot 300 gr. cast bullets in a .45-70 with 18" twist, with good hunting accuracy, as well as 540 gr. bullets for match accuracy. By analogy, a 260 gr. 40 caliber bullet should work fine, although I believe that's too light for good hunting performance.

The Lyman 457193 bullet was a Marlin design to work thru the Marlin lever action rifles so It would be about the longest nose that would work when crimped in the crimp groove. That bullet is for a 45/70 though. Mike Venturino in his book Shooting Lever Guns of the Old West only lists three bullets for the 40/65, the Lyman 403169, NEI 406-260GC and the Rapine 406250. The Lyman has been out of production for a long time and Rapine is out of business so you will have to search for a bullet that will work. BACO may have one or you'll need to go the custom route.
