you could the 40-70 because it is the same parent case , I do not know about the 40-90 the 40-50 ssbn is a pretty cool mid range ctg,, I think,, I use 50 gns of 1 or 1.5 and a 285 gn bullet ,

I don't have any experience with the 40-50 BN but if it were mine I would work with it the way it is from what I have read it is a nice medium round.

Spoke to Shiloh and for $100 it can be either of the larger bottle neck rounds. I have been thinking that in the interest of scientific research I should shoot it as a .40-50 BN and keep good records and then have it rechambered to .40-70 BN and do the same thing and then have them open it up to .40-90 BN and shoot and record. I could write it all up and have a nice .40 bottle neck comparison. Have to shoot some critters too. I wish there was a silhouette range close to add that in. I wonder if I could get a grant since it will be a research project?

With a 26 inch barrel would the .40-90BN be a flame thrower?

It's a real handful with a 30 inch barrel, don't think it'ld be much but a lot of noise in the 26. The thing holds bout 100 grs of powder, those cases are made from 2.6 cases or stretched 2.4's.

I am thinking the 70 is the way to go. I played around with one and it shot real well with the first greasers I tried. Of course if it does well as is it may stay and the i'll have an excuse to order a .50 cal for bigger stuff.

Components will be a helluva lot easier to find for the 40-70 I think or at least a bit cheaper. BACO stretched 45-70 is pretty dang good stuff in my estimation. This round is a heckuva lot more powerful than people imagine and I'd go with it over the 40-90. For the latter, save up and get one with a shotgun buttplate that weighs 12 or so pounds.

Re: Rechamber .40-50 BN
I run 330 & 370 gr ppb's in my 40-70 BN with 76 grs Fg powder they run 1335 and 1375 fps out of a 26 barrel on my saddle gun. I'd also vote for at least a 30" for a 40-90 SBN. For what it is worth BACO 2.6 reformed to 40-90 SBN only holds 90-91 grs drop tubed into the case, I think it was Starline brass. Last but not least if I was going to rechamber it I'd have it done with their tight original style reamer for paper patch bullet use only, 40-90 SBN weren't made to use greasers in. Listen to Powderburner and use the crap out of it as a 40-50 SBN for fun shooting and light game hunting. It's a great mid range target rd, also as a painless plinker. You asked . bobw
