Period Scope Choice

I have a Shiloh Saddle Rifle in 45-90 with 26 inch heavy barrel. Am thinking about scoping this with a period correct scope. Would appreciate any recommendations and considerations. Thanks in advance.

Back in the day the scopes were mounted on the dovetails of the barrel and where full length of the barrel they were not easily removed. An MVA full length scope is probably the closest you will get, if you have them machine the mount base so they dovetail into the barrel. They have done 3 sets for me and the work great, getting the scope lower to the barrel like the originals .

I just got mine back from MVA and it set up just like Orval said on a 34 inch barrel it is really a nice rifle now with that scope on it

Dean do they have to have your specific rifle to make dovetail bases? bobw

bob, they made it for the shiloh dovetail and it went right in,,the rear was a tat snug but a stone fixed it in three swipes,

I had asked Jim about it and he was confident it would fit ,so I just went with his cut,

What series scope and how much for the mts? bobw

Bobw get the scope they make for you barrel length if you have a 30 inch barrel then order the one they make for a 30 inch barrel. The have a series of numbers Ie 4000, 6000, etc. check their adds their adds show what series is for each barrel length. They just need to know the maker of the rifle (Shiloh) to cut the dovetail on the mount to fit the rifle.

With that 26 inch barrel about the only thing that would fit would be the MVA 23 inch or the DZ Arms scope. Both are good scopes, the MVA does give you choice in recticles, but the DZ just comes with a simple crosshair. The MVA Winchester B series scope would work nice on that short barrel as well.

The shorter scopes are not period correct the came about around the turn of the century long after Sharps was out of business. Before that even Winchester was using full length Malclom scopes, I have a very nice high wall with the full length malclom scope, the Winchester letter confirms it was shipped from the factory with it.

One thing you want to keep in mind using a full length scope and that is the lube and fouling will collect on the lens every shot you take.

Kurt the originals didn't have a lens close to the end it was set back in the tube, the MVAs I use are the same way, there is no bell on the end of the scope just the open tube even though the last one came with a cap with a clear lens I removed it, never had a problem with lube or fouling.

I left the cap on just because and had no problems ,I put over 100 rounds through it that day and checking the lens was the first thing I checked , nada,,I may just take it off but had no problems with it , true the wind was only quartering from the left front and a dead on head wind may prove different but then I gotta wash my glasses anyway.
