The originals were designed for BLACK POWDER so stick with it you get the real feel of what they were like to shoot.

Ross Seyfreid and others have established the "40% Rule" whereby you use 40% of whatever the BP charge is with certain smokeless powders.

Find such a reference and don't experiment with unknown loads.

I was told by the folks at Shiloh that you could shoot anything that you could shoot in a Ruger #1 45/70. I myself choose to shoot black.

You can shoot smokeless 45-70 loads in a Shiloh check the reloading manuals for specifics. I have shot smokeless in my 45-70 Shiloh using H4895 which nearly fills the case. I much prefer bp in 45-70 but also have a 30-40 Shiloh I shoot smokeless in and I like the round and love the rifle.

Blackhorn 209 shoots very well in them. (if you call that smokeless)

5574 is an awesome powder, but like others prefer BP.

Bill, though you don't mention the bullet weight - here is a chart by bullet weight with various smokeless powders. Be sure to read the text at the top of the page FIRST ... http://reloadammo.com/4570load.htm
Now, let me guess - you don't want to just experiment, you want to shoot smokeless exclusively because you don't like cleaning your rifle shooting black powder! :P

Shooting a 45-70 Shiloh can be a .457 lead round ball on top of few grains of bullseye, quiet, no recoil, accurate to 50 yards. Great for varmints in the yard. Death on coyotes at close range, IF, properly hit.

A few grains under max for Ruger #1 with IMR-3031 with 1-30 alloy is shooting a Shiloh, technically speaking.

The Sharps Rifles were the magnums of their day, loaded with black powder and lead bullets. True.

Shooting smokeless in them, in my experience, does not allow the rifle and black powder caliber in original Sharps chambering to reach it's design potential. Don't know about the 30-40 Krag.

If you don't shoot past 100 or so yards it really doesn't matter much. IMHO

If you want to shoot it up to it's and the black powder calibers potential past 200 yards with iron sights I am not optimistic about the results with smokeless powders.

I shoot an '85 Winchester in 45/70 and there are several powders that work well... IMR3031 is an old time favorite in this caliber. Newer powders that I prefer are Trail Boss and Accurate Arms 5744. Despite the acknowledged strength of the Shiloh Sharps, I'd really urge you to stay away from the Ruger#1 loads. You aren't likely to have to face down a Cape Buff in your backyard. A 16gr load of Trail Boss fills the case and pushes a 405gr cast bullet close to 1200fps. A 27gr load of A5744 pushes that same bullet at 1400fps. If you want an express-type load, 35gr of A5744 behind a 350gr bullet generates 1800fps from a 26"bbl or 1850fps from a 30"bbl. All of these loads fall within the lever-gun pressure guidelines.

I have had a Shiloh 45-70 for about 10 years and have shot smokeless exclusively.
I received my Shiloh 50-70 last summer and also shoot exclusively smokeless in it.
With 45-70 I have taken elk, and antelope.
Last weekend I took a large hog with the 50-70.
In both guns I use Reloader 7.
