Bullit fit 38-55

Post by CBarnard »

Just received my new Shiloh in 38-55. Very nice. Slugged the barrel, 0.374" groove and 0.3665" land to land. I have some bullets from the Lyman 378674 in 20:1 but the nose will not fit (bore rider?) into the muzzle, will they still shoot OK? The only mould that throws a bullit that fits the muzzle is part of an original Ideal No. 6 re-loading tool, but it has a slight boat tail base. I believe Lyman still make this bullet - 375248 but with a sharp base. Any advice or help would be welcome please.
For 100 to 200 yards with both nitro and black, mainly black.
Thanks,

I use that 330gr in my Shiloh 38/55.Seat the bullet deep enough in the case so the bullet is just off the rifling. They shoot well out to 500m with no wind.Ill try them in the wind, next time I get to shoot.Enjoy your rifle,Bob.

Bob, does the nose of your 330 grn bullets enter the muzzle up to the first driving band? I am using Starline 2.085" cases which is what Shiloh told me and not the 2.125" ones that are now available. I do have some though. Please can you advise on load details, I have Swiss No 4 (1 1/2).
Thanks,

Chris the bullet nose will not enter the rifling.Just keep seating the bullet until it is just kissing the lands. You can play with the depth and find out what works best in your rifle. This bullet seems to shoot good groups at 200yds.I am going to chrono my loads this afternoon.Have fun shooting,Bob. (this bullet will take up a lot case cap.if you are loading Black) Check Lymans book for smokeless specs on this bullet.

Thanks Bob. I have the latest Lyman so will check out the loads. Getting these rifles to shoot well is half the fun, I had a .223 rifle with scope for about a month and got rid of it, I got tired of shooting small groups!!! Not much of a challenge.

Sorted, I have a custom Creedmoor 330gn mould on order with Steve B, I have a few of his moulds in .40" cal and they are top notch. A nose of 0.365" and the body at 0.375" with 3 gg.
I will report on them once I get the mould and try them out.

Chris, just for added input, I have been running a Stevens 44.5 with British proofs in 38-55 with a Hoch mould that throws a 310gr bullet with 43gr Swiss 1.5 or a duplex load, and we are regulary hitting steel out to 500 yrds.

Thanks all for your input. I am in NZ at present, won't be home untill end of Nov.. Can't wait to try out my new mould, so it will be a while before I report back.
B 2, thanks for your load info., I have some Hoch moulds in 40 and 45 so might get one for my 38, yet again, top notch moulds.
Cheers,
Chris
PS It looks as though you guys have great choices for president - good luck y'all!
