bore dimensions for Shiloh .405

Post by humboldt »

I would like to know what the bore and groove dimensions are for the .405 Win. I take it that it is different from the 40-70. Mori

I don't think they do anything different for 405 vs 40-70 vs 40-65

Would be best to call and ask. 405 jacketed factory ammo bullet diameter is .411.

Don's right, I shouldn't have offered advice on this without knowing.

I do know the Shiloh produced barrels on my 40-65 and 40-70 SS rifles are 400/408

I believe Shiloh uses Douglas barrel for the .405 chambering. The bore dimensions are .405" bore-.412"groove. This topic was covered back several years ago. Kirk is the one to confirm this.

Question: You said that Shiloh uses Douglas barrels on the .405 but I thought Shiloh made their own barrels ?

Thanks for all the replys. You have answered my question and I don't think I will be going towards a .405. Maybe a 4070 Sharps straight if I can ever find brass. Thands, Mori

Buffalo Arms has the 40-70 SS in stock, by Bertram.

Cheaper than dirt shows Jamison .40-70 brass. Personally I use Hornady .405 brass trimmed to 2.5" in my .40-70. If you are considering getting a.40-70 you might want to consider discussing the brass with Kirk.

405 win comes under the saami umbrella.
a visit to their webste will show dimensions of ammo and chambers.
cannot say what shiloh does, but there is a good chance they would note saami where relevent.
40/72 using 405 win brass would be a different story.
this could well be 0.400/0.408, and has no saami specs.
a 405 would likely not chamber in a 40/72 chamber due to the necks being too tight for same.
keep safe,
bruce.
