Reshapeing brass

Post by Pete Shaw »

What does it take to reshape 30/40 krag brass into 40/70 SS? I know a case stretcher is needed, but what other tools is needed to complete the job?
If I opened up a can of worms, I'm sorry about that. and I do want to thank for your help in this matter.

Pete,

Have you thought about using Hornady 405 Winch cases? Out of the box they are a bit long but can be easily trimmed to just fit your specific rifle's chamber. And no stretching is needed. The only catch might be a slight difference in rim thickness? Maybe scrounge a case locally and see how it works before buying a bunch?

Prime the case, put about 5 gr. of unique and fill the case to just short of the mouth, put a hard wax cookie in the case mouth and fireform.
If you're rim recess will handle it, it would be quicker and easier to trim down either Captec or Hornady 405 brass, until Captec gets their next run of 40-70's out.

You could put in some of that flavored instant coffee for a real nice smell :-)

Pete,

You need to measure your rim recess. Most will be somewhat thicker than the 0.060" of the Krag rim, so may stretch upon firing, in addition to the need to stretch them. The ones BA sells have the rims thickened to avoid that.

Much easier to take one of the prior recommendations.
