What spares are recommended?

Post by Spin Drifter »

Hi all, I'm new to Sharps ownership and shooting and I would like to know what spares are recommended. I'm thinking an extra extractor and firing pin at the least. I don't carry a back up gun to matches or practice and while I expect this rifle to be reliable I realize that some times stuff happens....especially during a match.

As you already noted, the best backup is another gun. I always have one if I can. Twice it has bailed me out. Spare parts are sometimes not enough, c.f. last year's 22bpcra nationals.

Firing pin and spring, a lever spring, extra rifle and enough ammunition for it to shoot the entire match.

Never needed anything other that the firing pin tip w/spring, and a spare lever spring for our Shiloh's.

Definitely firing pin tips and a spare lever spring. I've seen broken mainsprings and transfer bars but that is a rare occurrence. At a big match such as Nat'ls someone will probably have anything you need.

Thanx everyone. I've had the breach block for cleaning, but haven't figured out how to get the firing pin or transfer block out.

Tap that cross plate, on the back of the block to the left with a brass drift, and there ya go.

New to the game here.

These firing pins and lever springs, after how many rounds do they tend to break?

No telling.
When the lever spring goes-The lever starts to droop.
If your groups open up for no reason. Check the FP.

At the Quigley shoot this year, one of my cartridges suffered a case neck separation. Regardless of everyone else's experience with tight patches, snug jags, dental picks, etc., it wouldn't release. I was finally able to extract the orphaned neck by plugging the bore ahead of the chamber, heating up and pouring in a measure of 160-180F Cerrosafe, letting it harden, then driving out the whole casting and inclusion with a wooden dowel hammered from the muzzle end. In the future, I will keep a chunk of Cerrosafe in my possibles box should such an event happen again.

Did you try driving(AKA pounding )a bullet from the muzzle back to the chamber :!:
For my .45 cal rifles. I carry a few .45 cal jacketed pistol bullets, in my 'junk' box just for this.

Yah, that would probably work for almost everyone but me ... I tried just about everything. I hope there's no next time, but if there is, I'll go back and rely on what worked for me last.

My way has worked on the firing line, and not just for me.
Good luck,
