A couple upsides to the longer barrel. First a longer sight plain, and second, one can always cut it down.

Just got my letter for final payment from Shiloh for my 1874 Sharps rifle. Hope to have it by the Whittington Creedmoor match.
32" half oct heavy with a single set trigger in 45-100 with shotgun butt and checkering. Very similar to the long range rifles produced for a few months in 1876-77. I've seen a couple of originals on the Rock Island or Morphy's auctions and I wanted one like them.

my 45-100 (2.6) weighs 10.95lbs with a 32in barrel. I do use a BACO recoil pad but I have the steel butt plate. This past fall I shot my 4000 round thru it, still love shooting it and hope to be able to for a long time!!!

Sometimes what we want is not the same as what will work best. If you can not separate the two go with what you want and just disregard the advise on what would be best for what you hope to do with it. That way at least you'll have what you wanted when it doesn't work out the best.
