French grey
Is the French Grey option done in house at Shiloh or do you send parts out to get French Grey?

Looks great to.

what exactly is "French grey" - I mean what is it made of?
will it last longer than the charcoal and bone case colors - is it hard like industrial chrome?
does it match the pewter forend?
thanks!!

Re: French grey
French grey is done by first case coloring and then removing the colors with a mild acid (toilet bowl cleaner is one of the favorites).
It retains corrosion resistance and hardness but is just grey.

Yes it matches the pewder forend.
I like this french gray Shiloh uses better than other competitors that look more like polished steel.

Re: French grey
It can get dark wear spots and as far as I know, can't be touched up.

boy, i'm trying to figure that one out - pack hardening is a 300 buck option, French greay costs 200 - what am I missing?
the cost of toilet cleaner and elbow grease?
Kurt - you're not using toilet bowl cleaner on your rifles are you?
i'll NEVER hear the end of this from my wife!!

Re: French grey
First of all you don't use toilet cleaner. The cost has to do with all of the extra labor that goes into it.

Kirk, YOU don't. But I can tell of several guild gunmakers that do.
And mild acid will do. What do you use?

My first Sharps, the Hell Bitch, is circa 1994 Sept French Gray, and engraved with my initials.
It has a lot of character, it’s on Barrel #2 (2005) and still wins on occasion, 2006, 2013 and a few Phoenix matches.

Pedersoli did a batch of 74 Competition models and Cabelas was the distributor They didn’t sell well and they dumped on their website for $999. Could not resist ... and the French Gray was true as it should be ... stunning

Re: French grey
Does anyone have good photos of recentently produced Shilohs with French gray and engraving? Particularly with lot s of engraving and background fill? I had read in a post from a few years ago that Shilohs French gray finish is now more of a “nickel finish”...does anyone have information of photos showing the difference in how the two finishes look on the Shilohs, if in fact there has been a change?
