PP Hunting bullet

What would be a good hunting bullet for a 45/110. I read in the archives that a Baco 560 round nose was good. Does anyone else make one?

You might consider having brooks build one of his dual diameter bullets with the original postel nose with the weight held around 540 if you don’t go with one of BACOs moulds

If Kenny W. doesn't see this thread then you might want to send him a message and see what he uses in his Business Rifle.

There are many options, but I would not get a bullet much over 500 grs and I tend to prefer to be under that weight.

What will you hunt and what do you think the likely shooting distances might be?

And what sort of chamber does your rifle have?

The archived post was from him, he said he had not shot it at that time but liked it. I may do that .

what are you trying to hunt?? elephant or squirrels?? deer/elk/moose/B bear/Caribou/muskox/sheep etc... you should be fine with a 425-450ish grain bullet, I would shoot for a .250ish meplat, cast out of 30-1, that will smack the heck outta just about anything. Buffalo I would step up a little bit 475-500gr and same mepalt.

Not exceptionally impressed with lighter bullets on elk
Antelope you won’t keep any 45 caliber bullet from blowing right thru much the same with deer
535-550 gr patched bullets have worked well for me over the last years or so

The Feb 2008 post talked of a Baco PP mould that made a bullet with a Govt round nose that came out at 550-560 gr. After looking at many designs for PP I think I am going to try this . I like the nose for a hunting bullet and want to PP in the 45/110 . I think 30-1 may make a fine hunting bullet with this mould.

while a 550 grn bullet will certainly work, you are using a lot of powder space for an unnecessarily heavy bullet.

I used a 480 grn bullet with a .45-70 on a moose and it was just fine. More than enough.

My 2 45/70s like those bullets also, but that's not the gun I'm loading for. I'm trying to find a PP for the 110.

you still don't need a 550 gr bullet. Bison died to a 473 gr bullet by the millions.

The bullet you need for your 45-110 is a round nosed bullet with a flat base that is parallel sided and 1.310 inches long. It needs to weigh about 510 grains at 30-1. Talk to Steve Brooks--he can fix you up. Shoot straight, rdnck.
